my g/fs 95 z w/2.3L keeps overheating really bad.... heres how it all started................... it starts good, but every once in awhile it'll die,,, let it sit for anywhere between 10min to an hour and it'll start and drive like nothing happened then w/out notice itll sputter and die (it throws the check engine code and all that says is "system running too lean") my guess on this is plugged cat,,,,, then about a week ago it starts overheating an d losing coolant......... it dosent look like it's coming from the pump housing.... on the left side of the engine (where the return hose comes from the engine to the radiator) it leaks from the piece that the hose hooks up to,,, (this piece also has a metal tube connected to it that looks like it leads to the transmision or it's a water pump bypass tube,,,,,????? not sure....) but anyways,,, coolant leaks from in between the engine and this conector........ what is wrong with this car??????????? can anyone help?

That pipe and housing IS where the water pump is... so I'd hazard a guess that your water pump is shot. Especially if it's overheating...

nooooooo, i know where the water pump is,,,,, im talking the other side of the engine,,, the housing has nothing in it, and one of the two bolts is behind the power steering pump..........this is on the 2.3 btw
the water pump is ont the side with the cam gears and such,,,, it's in that housing

There's the pipe that leads from the water pump housing to the heater core (in the dash, for the HVAC system).. it's got a couple of hoses that T off into the dash and back, then connect to the top of the engine where the upper rad hose comes off. Maybe you've got a leak.

But if the car is overheating... that's more than just a leak. How is the coolant level? And when was the last time you changed the coolant?

would a plugged cat cause the engine to overheat? since the exhaust isnt expelling the hot exhaust gasses like it should,,, i know it'll cause the engine to die/stall because of backpressure....

I know you guys are going back and forth about the engine overheating, but I think I may be able to offer some insight into the car sputtering and dying...

I had an '89 Buick Skyhawk that would caugh and die on me if I was driving around for a while. If I let it sit for a while (similar time frame, anywhere from 10 minutes to an hour) and tried to start it, the car would fire right up. Come to find out the fuel line would become too plyable when the car was warm, so it would collapse in on itself and cut off the flow of gas to the injectors. I had the fuel line replaced and the car ran fine.

I figure it's worth looking into.

The term 'stock' is COMPLETELY relative...

ill check on the fuel line, but it goes long periods of time w/out dieing also... and im pretty sure all the fuel lines are steel tubeing,,,, errrr, the ones that would heat up with the engine anyways

1 of the heater hose goes to the thermostat housing. The other one goes on the water pump inlet. What you are talking about if the thermostat housing. There's suppose to be a gasket between the housing and the head. change the thermo and see if it help. You may have 2 TB coolant line too.

For the cutting and sputering. Unplug the O2 sensor and run it for a while. If the car is fine and never die, you have a problem with a sensor.

hello, curious if you find out what was causing your problems? I'm checking out a '95 Sunfire GT 2.3L today. It's suppose to have a bad waterpump. i'm more worried if the overheating caused some head gasket problems. I wondering if your leak could be a Timing Belt cover? My minivan would overheat sometimes and then run fine. starting leaking fluid and it was the timing belt cover housing, which also rerouted water though the engine. Wes

i can probabally tell you it is the water outlet on the right side of the engine that is probably causing your problems...i just had mine done and it solved my problem.
