Just out of curiosity, how many miles did ur J have before it started breaking down? What is the norm for our cars?

there usually isn't a specific mileage where cars start to break down they can break down anytime.

97 OHV Sunfire.... 133,000Kms nothing major yet!

I just did the normal stuff like oil, brakes, filters. I think I changed stuff that would brake down the like with aftermarket parts before it had a chance to brak down. This would include struts, bushings, battery, exhaust, etc.

110K miles on a 93 sunbird... had to change the coil packs but still ran like a champ.
The body on the other hand, I had a watter leak because the body filler was cracking.

87 z24 with the 2.8 v6. Ran like a champ. Torque converter was weak and torque converter lock worked most of the time but often was stuck. Probly around 125k 150k or so. Did not know since the digitial dash was not original.

Fokes had a early 80's cavy station wagon. It had about 150k miles on it before we got rid of it. Only thing wrong with that was a pluged up cat.

I'm betting my 04 cavy will last me 200k plus.

I think most stock front brakes on the third gen cars die prematurely... mine died around 20,000 miles. Other than that, I haven't had any "problems" other than things related to bad modifications...

On my third J now.. the first from 167 kms to 95,002 when it was torched (60,000 miles). No major problems. The second more than that (can't remember exactly what, but I've just had to change the accessory belt.. no major service.). The third I've really buggered up thru modifications... head work, etc.. but still nothing's broken on it.

Even shoving nitrous into all the motors... I guess I've been lucky?

Only mile after the warranty expires.

Actually my 04 Cav has been great. I have 15,000 miles, and the only problems were the front rotors had to be resurfaced, and the truck latch was messed up.

The car will start to break down when you ignore maintainance, no matter what make or model, granted, some are worse than others.
Mine has been what I consider normal, had to do a few things, but nothing major, yet.
Aside from the normal routine, my car has been flawless after 44K, and 2.5 years, no majors.

1997 chevrolet cavalier 2.2 i have 197,000 kms on it nothing big except the head gasket going but i had a warranty. it all depends on how you treat your engine right now its running great despite the high kms

My '99 has about 93,000 miles now & it's only needed maintenance & the usuals (battery, wipers, brakes, etc.). I know my car is well maintained, but it's retired from racing since November of '03. I keep waiting for something to go wrong with all of the stories I read on here, but it really hasn't let me down or even come close. I just don't want to push my luck.

On the other hand, if someone was to ask me if I thought buying a '99 with 93,000 miles was a good thing to do, I'd advise against it. Maintenance is such an important thing & there's really no way to know how it was treated.

New battery.. due to leaving it on
New alternator due to Stereo equipment
NEw transmission due to racing

111k Miles 1996 Runs like its new other then the stuff ive messed up.. althought my AC did stop working. i think i maintin my car very well of course no mileage is good but i think a car can damn near go forevri try to change the oil about 2800 miles or so coolant flush a couple times and tranny flush a couple times. Fuel Filter.. you spend a little on filters and maintain it gain some knowledge about cars along the way and youll do just fine

By starting you assume that it has stopped braking down.
