What Could This Be!?!?
Thursday, July 07, 2005 8:33 PM
Well, To Start, I have a 1998 Pontiac Sunfire, 2.4L W/ 89K Miles.

Okay, This is what its doing. When i start it up, and sit in one spot, It spits and sputters. Jerks alil' bit, Basicly just adds a bit more of a shake to it. Now, When driving down the road, No difference is noticed, unless i let of the gas, and reapply it. Then i feel it pop and jerk before it starts to excellerate again. It dogs down before it picks back up.

If i drive for more then 10 minutes, and go to stop, 2 things take place. By the time i come to a complete stops, it stalls out (or comes pretty darn close). Or, It stops, But when i go to take off, It dogs down, before it catches, Then takes off.

Now, i'm aware of an exhaust leak i have, But i don't think its causing all this,
Also, Would like to add, I've placed Fuel System Cleaner in the tank, Just replaced my Air Filter, and i replaced my fuel filter about, 12-15k miles ago. I don't know whats goin' on =(...... But honestly, I'm starting to think its getting worse

Any suggestions?
All info and help is greatly appreciated

check your fpr, and also check your tb. it could also be your spark plugs, oh wait your a 2.4L, check your ignition coil.

Well, In most cases, When Plugs go bad, You can usually hear the difference, Right?........I can't heat a difference in my engine, Just feel it.

Also, How do i check the FPR?.......And Ignition Coil?

And as far as my throttle body goes, I took off the intake pipe, and it looked fine. I cleaned it, But other then that, I don't know what else it would need done, Lol

Thanks for the help ^.^........

Also, Could i safely gap the plugs, a tad bit more then stock recomends? For better performance?

The larger the gap, the longer the spark but the weaker it is. Oposite goes for closing the gap a bit more. In my experience, a shorter/stronger spark is better than a bigger/weaker one.

That makes sense, I'll prolly try that.
Do you think that could be the problem?.......I planned on changin' them anyway, So i guess i'll just do that, and hope for good results.

Thanks for the help everyone
If anyone else has their 2 cents, Feel free =D

my parents 2000 sunfire with the 2.4 also around 90,000 miles was doing this a couple weeks ago. The problem was it was missing something around 2 quarts of oil. Also, the car needed a new head gasket, and coolant is leaking into the combustion chamber.

So check your oil also, and make sure none is leaking out through the head gasket.

Thats odd that you mention that, Because last oil change (Maybe, 3-4 weeks ago ) i added this engine treatment to it, And that is when this trouble started =/..........
I will check level of oil, and readd if need be.

How would i go about checking if my gaskets are leaking?.....Would i notice burning oil?.
Also, I have no coolant in my car, Just water =/.....But i was always told that stuffs not required.

you would more than likely see oil seeping out, just look at the block and you will see it if its there

Well, My brother said that it could be caused by a failed Fuel Injector. I guess i'll install those, and replace my fuel filter. If its not either of those, Any other recomendations?
Because i'm runnin' out of ideas =P
