2.4 Howling noise....???
Monday, June 20, 2005 6:30 PM
Hey All...

Driving my car tonight, i noticed the engine was howling.... You can only hear it @ low rpms...

Its not a wheel bearing or anything like that, definatey coming from the engine somewhere... My friend suggested that the timing chain needs replaced...

I tried searching the forums, but theres not much info on timing chains or howiling noises...

Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks!

Well... Mine howls also when the AC is on- but this particular howl caused me to turn my radio down and go WTF?

Its pretty darn loud inside the car... It doesnt sound like a belt whining or squeaking- kinda sounds like the intake manifold-

I dont farking know- I was kinda hoping it happened to alot of people.

if its when your turning, check the power steering fluid. if its does it whether your turning or not, get the alt. tested. if you have an intake or removed most of the stock air intake system, chances are thats what it is and your just now noticing it. just my .02 hth

I think the intake is one of the 1st things I installed on the car- so its not that.

The car doesnt have to be moving- just rev the engine- either driving down the street or in park.

I drove it for a little bit today, and it almost sounds like a whine- I can hear it @ idle very faintly...Ive heard whiney engines before, but mine is kinda half howl, half whine.

I just washed out my engine bay last thursday for a car show, so maybe I farked up the bearings in the alternator-- We are going to take off the belt and start the car- if the noise stops, then I know its not the timing chain... Im pretty sure 2.4's have a timing chain.

yup, my brothers car has the same howl. Howl at idle, low rpms, high rpms, its always there. Sometimes it goes away, sometimes it comes back. We have been ignoring it for a while now.

I posted the problem before and we came up to the conclusion that it was one of the pullies making the howling. Most likely the tensioner pully.

If your taking off your belt, spin all the pullies by hand and see if they turn smoothly or they are pretty rough. If the a pully doesnt freely spin too well, thats your howl rite there.

GET Back to us and let us know.

Well...

I had the guy @ autozone check my charging system... With the car running, its only putting out like 11.9 volts...

My alternator has bit the dust- I kinda figured since the power windows are going up insanely slow... I have to rev the motor to make them go faster. ..

My new one should be here sometime next week.

I was going to guess power steering pump, but glad you solved it.
