I have a 98 pont sunfire 2.2...i've noticed that the A/C is not as cool as it once was..it's still cold..but not how i remember...i was wondering if i could recharge the a/c myself..if so how? I've seen cans of refrigerant in stores and I don't know if that is what i need..if this is the solution..what do i need to do and where..thanks

if best to have it serviced , this way the correct amount of freon is used

also they will evac the system , and put it under a vacuum which will boil out any moisture in the system

If you just want to recharge your system, you're going to need the pressure gauge along with your cans of freon. You can pick them up anywhere. Walmart used to carry them pretty cheap down here...not sure about there. Your car may just need a recharge because of the year. If you noticed that quite a bit of freon is missing...you are going to have to look for the leak.

after working at a dealership, i agree with 97cavie24ls. the right way to do it, evac it, and fill it. its worth it.

Can be upwards of $180 here in Central PA. I'm having the same issue with my 95...

That's ONLY for the refill, tho (and I guess the evac). Any work they need to perform (leak testing, repairs) are separate.

A diagnostic for my car is roughly $30.

------

Any body know if you can override the compressor cutoff long enough to get the compressor to engage just so you can fill the system yourself? My problem is that the compressor won't come on at all since the system pressure is so darn low, and I can't add the refrigerant since the compressor is not running.

I know you can override it temporarily, but how long is too long?

I can't afford to spend $200+ bucks right now to do it the *right* way, btw...

Thx.

from what i've seen...you can turn on the a/c and start to refill the system. as soon as it has enough pressure, the a/c compressor should engage.

I believe that u get a piece of wire, insulated of course, and remove the plug for the sensor and place the wire end to end in it. The plug is usually on the direr and that should do it. On the Cav it should be right in behind the radiator from inside the engine bay. I have done this to my Z-71 and the Cav to refill when the freon is to low to acitivate the compressor. If the system is empty usually a can is needed to get going on its own. U can get a charge system with a gauge that indicates when it is full and it is reusable, something like for 29.99 at autozone, comes with the gauge, hardware and 1 can of Freon. I u do have a leak, get one can with a UV Dye so u can black light it to find the leak. Dont forget to get one with some compressor oil, if u got a leak I am sure that the compressor might need some too. Remember clean the engine compartment to make it easier to find the leak. Clean the compressor area, lines and fittings and the drier. If u fill it and cant find the leak, figure out how long the freon lasts in the car. 2 days, 1 month?
