how many quarts of oil?
Thursday, June 02, 2005 10:25 AM
just did another oil change yesterday. i have a question. the manual says to fill the crankcase with 4 quarts when emptied. when i put 4 quarts in and check the dipstick it shows that there is about .25 to .50 quarts more than the full line!

should i just go by the manual and drop the 4 quarts in, or should i just fill it to where i think it should be, at the full line? i mean it runs fine with the full 4 quarts, but, naturally, i dont want to ruin the engine.

does anyone have the same problem?

Did you start the car to allow the oil to pump thru the oil filter? This could be why you show more. I would always fill to the owner's manual specs unless you have completed some mod's that would affect oil quantity.

Dave (2uniq) your the "dumbass" you cant even read a post...i said my manual says 4 quarts...and Rob S heres for you...i double check it EVERY time this arguement comes up...to quote section 5-85 "application-engine oil with filter-english 4.0 quarts-metric 3.8L". in case you want to reference it the manual is part #22713147 B First Edition. copyright general motors corporation 11/06/03. now this may be an error on GM's part as far as my manual is concerned but that is exactly what it says. i dont care what YOUR manual says. so continue to say what you will and flame away like a bunch of noobs if it makes you feel like big men, but it still wont change whats printed in my manual...

BTW...1/2 quart below "full" wont sieze an engine...1/2 quart below "min/add" would be a problem...

Yes, a 32mm socket works great...I picked one up at Advance Auto yesterday.

Also make sure to get 6 point not 12 point, so it fits perfectly.

Just bought a 2005 LS Sport, and it's pretty interesting how the oil capacities listed in the manual are different depending on year. You can access all manuals online straight from GM, so I checked them all out.

2002 5.8 qt
2003 5.0 qt
2004 5.0 qt
2005 4.0 qt

Did GM just make typos in this specification, or were there changes to the oil pan etc. to result in their recommended fill being different depending on year? I guess I'll put 5 in since that's what most people use.
