Ok i didn't know where to put this so i am putting it here.. My car burns about a qaurt of oil between oil changes and its an 01 its done this every since i bought and there is no leaks what so ever.. SO i went to the dealer that i bought it from and they said that gm says its normal for a newer car to burn a quart of oil in 3,000... Just wondering if anyone else heard this or if they where just feeding me a line of bs... Thanks guys
my car does the same and its a 96
btw this belongs in maintenance not general
I burn a quart to ever 1000 miles... i have a 93...
General Motors (before they started smokin the crack), stated that oil consumption should not be considered a problem in a J Body until it burns in excess of a quart within 750 miles...
It is NOT normal at all for new car to burn oil.
Dont know why GM thinks it is.
Now my mom van has 173,000 on it and it consumes a littel bit, but burn it, no way.

You have to remember ... all of our stock engines save the 3100 and posibly the 2.4 (but i dunno cause ive never researched it) came from other sources
ecotec, vortec (the originial tec) (these two GM), vtec (Honda), zitec (Mazda, but used in Fords) ... u see something in common here???
next the 2200 and the 2.2 were derived from Vaux Haux (spelling)... A european car manufactuer
and the 2.0 was derived from GM's brazillian counterpart....
if GM designed the engines you would think they'd know more about oil consumption..
oh well.. let em hit their crack pipe....
sorry i cant say burn it but it just disapears...
I may be smoking crack but i thought i read somewhere that burning oil was a sign that your piston rings need changed.

Ecotec, Vortech, and VTEC have absolutely NOTHING to do with each other. The Eco is in no way related to ANY honda/DSM engine, never was in this life or the last. You'll never find anything in common between the engines as far as cutting edge technology goes. The coincidence that they have the word "tec" at the end of them is just that, pure coincidence.

Buy stuff from CarCustoms Ebay! Won't be disappointed!
1 quart in 3,000 miles is not a problem. Try using 10W-30 in the summertime and see if it reduces consumption. My 2002 OHV doesn't use anything between oil changes but my old 1993 used 1 quart every 3,000 miles since new. BTW here in Richmond, VA I use 10W-30 year round. The 1993 Cav didn't use any more than that after 150,000 miles.
God bless America.
i do use 10w-30 all year round...
My 99 z24 has always used about 1 litre of oil between changes. Recently, it has started using more and more oil, last change I had added over 1.5 litres before I hit 5000 and needed a change. Oh well, I guess it's time to buy something else.
