oil change on 04 cav - what filter, what oil, etc
Thursday, May 26, 2005 6:03 AM
this will be my first oil change on my new car. all the other ones have been free. just curious as to which oil filter to get, or just go to the auto parts store and they'll tell me..

and how much oil? 3 or 4 quarts? and I assume the type of oil i need is on the oil filler cap?

is this the correct procedure:
remove bolt from oil pan, drain
remove oil filter, replace with new one
replace bolt in the pan
refill

do I need to let the engine run or anything before driving it again?

What brand filter I don't think matters. I usually go to Murray's and get the AC Delco paper filter. I am assuming you know that the oil filter is accessed from the top of the engine. You have to unscrew the black cover. It is not the metal oil filters I was used to.

It will use 5 quarts of oil and I think it calls for 5w30.

Your procedures appear correct.

I know that this thread has the potential to turn ugly now that brand names are popping up, but.....

Fram makes the WORST filters! Stay away! The top two brands for filters are ACDelco and K&N (I use K&N). Filters do matter, when the crappy Fram paper ones fall apart

For oil I stay with Mobil 1, under lab tests it outperformed all other brands. It came as the best normal oil, but fell short of the expensive AMSOil.

i always use fram and never had a problem. i take the old on off and rub oil on the edge of the new one and in it goes. its a fairly easy process. i never use to do my oil. i use to take it to the dealer and let them do it because i got a discount and it saved me the hassle of doing everything. should take you about 10-15 mins

zerk fittings. 5 quarts of oil. I have used fram and it was the only filter to distort. the element bends. Use wix, ac delco, bosch.

i agree with the oil and filter, but i think the filter is the biggest pain in the ass i have ever seen.......why did they do this......its a bad design to me......i don't like it, i wish it had a regular screw on filter

Well.... since I am a visual person here are pictures of the filters to illustrate just how crappy fram is.

Fram Filter: notice it's a paper design, this filter has more recalls than a Kia.

ACDelco: no paper, except for the filter, one of the best out there

K&N: the best filter out there

After seeing all that no one can say that it's all the same.

That's all fine and good there but for one, those are canister filters, not cartridges like the Ecotec has. Secondly, K&N doesn't make a filter for the ecotec engine. Third, That's an old design of a fram filter.. the tough guard level (and up) filters are far better quality than that.

Not trying to start anything.. just tossing in my $0.02 =P
