Please save my car. If I can't fix it, it'll face the business end of a sledge hammer. Made the sorry mistake of paying a shop to put a new starter in it last week. Went to start it today, heard that wallet-emptying 'pop' and lost all that is electric. I'm guessing it's a link or fuse buried somewhere but my (marginally useful) Haynes manual is in a different province. The car's a 1994 4cyl (2.4 I guess, but who really cares how big a fourbanger is?). Has anybody had this happen? What could have been frigged during the starter install? where is the fuse which a short at the starter would blow? My car thanks you in advance.
Could be that the power wire from the battery to the starter was not installed properly and grounded to the engine.
That would cause the fuseable link to blow on the starter wire. May need to check for continuity (using a multi-meter or a test light) on that wire. If there is no continuity, could be the fuseable link blew.
That would disable the starter for sure.
As for the rest of the car, the wire running from the alternator back to the battery is not fused. That could have grounded out, causing some type of electrical problem, up to a nd beyond the situation you described. Worst case scenario, engine fire.
Any reputable shop should warranty the labor. Best bet would be to call the shop and find out if there is a warranty.
If so, you may have a chance to get the electrical problem traced for free.

a 94 4 bangers a 2.2 liter...dont try to get and extra point 2 liters on the rest of us *shakes fist*
lol jk
Engine fire, huh? Sounds fun. About the best thing that can happen to a teal green automatic... plus maybe some insurance payout (if I can time it in traffic). As for warranty work, the shop is:
a) not reputable
b) 1000km east of where I live
The reason I paid them (too much at that) was because I was moving from calgary to Victoria the next day. I'm sure that they would be REALLY concerned with my long-distance greivances. not. Thanks for the advice, I'll check it out. Till then it's Vandura Cruising Time!!! Anybody want some candy?
Tim
P.S. My car is effectively a 1.1L then - I'm pretty sure it only fires half the time!
Hi Tim
maybe it is not the fusible link, it may just be a bad connection on the Positive or Negative battery cables.
Make sure both the leads and the earth/ground points are really clean and the connections tight, they have obviously been disconnected to fit the new starter.
I hope it's only this!, worth a try anyway
