Water Pumps how long do they last? (3 in 1.5 yrs)
Tuesday, May 24, 2005 5:38 AM
I got a 98 Z24 with 220,000km on it
I replaced my 1st water pump at 170,00km. Had my mechanic put in a generic pump.
11 months later I had a puddle again and new pump needed(30,000km on that one).
Since i supplied the pump I was not covered for the labour.
So my mechanic suggested pay a bit more and have him supply an AC Delco. Better pump and coverage is it fails.

soooo 4 months later and maybe 15,000km Another puddle of coolant under the car.

I just don't get it. Dropped the car off to the mechanic today. They are going to verify that it is the pump. I don't know what else it could be.

How long should these pumps last?? What brands are best? Could the mechanic be installing them in a way that is damaging them.

Any insight would be appreciated.

What exactly is failing, the gasket, the weap hole, where is it leaking from?

Are AC delco re-mans or new??

The 1st 2 were the weap hole. The current one I am not sure...just waiting for my mechanic to call me back.

And I thought I was done doing work to this car. Just replaced the Clutch a week ago. i though the fluid under the car was from the slave . Not the case. (the slave was leaking though)

update,

I just called my mechanic.

He was still not 100% sure but he said he thought it may be a blown head gasket as their is cooland up top aswell in the rear of the engine. He said that this may be why I am going through water pumps.

This doesn't seem to make sense cause would I have not always had the collant leak? The car was dry up to 1 week ago.

Hea also asked me about obver heating. I told him that is has never overheated on me and has been the same since new.

What are the symptons of a blown head gasket??

- my car runs as it did brand new. No hesitation - has never stalled-never overheated - no white smoke - Plugs done a month ago and looked perfect - oil is as it should look.

Any thoughts? I just want to make sure I am armed incase the mechanic is trying to get out of covering a water pumps install.

thanx

If your head gasket was blown you would see white smoke out of your exhaust.

A compression test would reveal that two cylinders next to each other are both very low, like 60-90psi.

A cylinder leak down test would make the radiator flood over.

Ask him to do a compression test, and cylinder leakage test.

It sounds like the mechanic already owes you for 2 water pump installs.

The mechanic is supposed to be the ultimate troubleshooter, he should be eliminating all other causes of the problem before proceeding to the fix. If he is not sure of the problem, what are you paying him for? Tell him we give good guesses here for free!!

I would advise you to find another mechanic.

Could be a misaligned timing chain/belt.
That creates stress on bearings, which could grenade an engine all together.
That diagnostic requires a pro, with the right equipment, and know how.
I recommend a second opinion, hate to say it, but like a dealer, which I know costs, but they do have all the right stuff, and all TSBs on the issue, may end up being an initial shock to the wallet, but might save your motor in the long run.
