Whenever I brake at high speeds (about 50+), the steering wheel shakes. When I slow down alittle, or at lower speeds, everything is fine. No lights come on at the higher speeds, and the doesn't seem to be going side to side. Is anyone having this problem, or is it common, or is something up w. the brakes? No squeeking or anything that would indicate brake pad/rotor issues. It's a 97 cav, 2.4L.

Most likely a warped rotor would be my guess. My rotors are warped and are going to be changed as well in a week or two here as well as putting new brake pads on it while I'm at it. If you change the rotors out make sure you put new brake pads on at the same time so everything is brand new all at once. You can have good brake pads and warped rotors, the squeal from the brake indicator only happens once the brake pads are down to the indicator of course so you could definitely have good brake pads and a bad rotor(s).

And warped rotors would be the cause of the steering wheel shaking at high speeds?

Unbalanced tires, warped rotor, or bad wheel bearings.

Does it shake under braking or not? If it shakes under braking probably need new rotors. If it shakes when you are just driving the tires probably need rebalancing.

Just braking, at speeds about 50+ when I hit the brake...after it slows down (which is usually a sec or two) it's fine again.

The only problem buying drilled or slotted rotors, is you wont find a shop that will machine them because they dont want to wreck the cutting tip.

So what do you have to do if you have slotted rotors and need them machined?
