ive got the 2200 slghtly moded(check profile)
it dosent overheat but its running too hot imo...
at idle it stays at the line right before the red...
it has half a gallon of coolant(the orange one) the rest is plain water.
i recently changed the water pump but it was doing this before that.
when running on the street(up to speed) the dial stays between the two white lines on the gauge not all the way up...
also the fan is running checked that already too.
any ideas??
"There is no point in looking fast if your not."
not positive on this because i hear different thing but i always just put the coolant in w/ no water. i was told dex-cool is already mixed with water. also try replacing the thermostat
I had the same problem with my 97 sunfire, I changed the water pump, the in a month it overheated and I had to replace ythe engine because all of the seals were ruined and the heads were warped. Now I dont have that problem (knock on wood) but I took it for a dianostic and they said it was just the water pump. I would only use the dexcool and no water the bottle says not to mix, I would flush the system and refill with only dexcool and watch your gauges.
So im just supposed to use plain dexcool no water...?
"There is no point in looking fast if your not."
use just plain dex-cool, no water, i had a problem close to that with my 2002 sunfire 2.2 and the one night i was out and the temp started to climb up more. so i changed the water pump and that did nothing and checked the fan thermastat and it was good and in the end discovered that my head gasket was soaking throw on the number 2 cylinder, it hadn't comletley blown but it was on its way there
Mixing water with dexcool will definately cause overheating. As has already been stated, the water doesn't have the same cooling properties, and by mixing it you are effectively lowering the heat transfer capabilities. If that still doesn't work, replace the thermostat. Hell, I'd replace the thermostat anyway, it's a cheap part and relatively easy to change.

how much coolant will the 2200 take?
"There is no point in looking fast if your not."
n/m i found it guys... thanks for the info.

not to jack the post or anything but how do you empty out the old coolant and the 2200 because i was looking for a plug to drain it but found nothing. if yall could tell me would be great.
usually theres a drain on the bottom of the radiator on the drivers side but i havent checked yet..
try searching
"There is no point in looking fast if your not."
If you're not too concerned about making a mess, the quickest way to do it is to remove the radiator hoses (top and bottom) and let her drain. Just unhook the hoses at the motor. I've done it this way before, but like I said, it makes a pretty big mess if you're not careful.

sounds basically like my car when the head gasket was going. at idle it'd climb up to the red. but once i started moving around 40 mph it drop down.

SO EVERYTHING!
ill swap the water/coolant with coolant and if no go..
ill get ready to do a PnP...
maybe i should start ordering valve train parts.

ok guys,
ive changed the water/coolant with only coolant and changed the thermostat still no go ... sae theing; its got a new water pump, coolant, and thermostat but its still doing the same thing.
its fine on the road but at idle it will go into the red... on the road it will stay sticking straight up((half way between both white lines). the fan is comming on. the lower hose(going into the water pump doesnt get hot at idle or on the road; the upper one going into the head stays HOT at idle and on the road... i do not know what else to do.... besides just busting the guts out of the thermostat and letting the water flow all the time but i dont really wanna do that... i wanna get i fixed before my head gasket blows out...
what do you guys/girls think?
"There is no point in looking fast if your not."
i work at dealership and they have the GM dex-cool orange one in the black jugs and they mix it...
sounds just like when i had to get my head gasket replaced.
after i got the head gasket replaced, it's all back to normal. i'd have a mechanic look it over first. don't wanna replace the head gasket if thats not the problem (since it cost me like $600).

^ i figured that. it says 70% to 30% water on the bottle but it shouldnt hurt anything... it does get up to 105 in the summer(witch is comming) here...

^ a bad head gasket isnt going to make it run hot...
it WILL blow if it runs hot but not run hot because of the head gasket.

the wwarmer the climate the more coolant.

DeadBob wrote:Wait... I just picked up a bottle of dex cool from a dealer last week... the direction on the back say to mix it 50 -50 with clean TAP water...
Now you guys are saying don't mix it
tap water generally has minerals and other impurities in the water. these impurities can lower boiling points.
distilled water pretty much should be used as the distilling process is more or less purifying the water.
quick self done demo...
take two pots...
fill one with tap one with distilled water, put both of same size burners and on hi...
the tap will boil far before the distilled.
most coolant already comes premixed, so really no need to water it down. let it do its job.

i notice you have the same setup as i do more of less. what thermostat did you use? i had 2 stants, a kem, and then i got this advice from E Remboldt
Quote:
ac delco parts
now i thought a therm is a therm. turned out it wasnt. since the ac delco and also a cooling system flush... thats what i would reccomend. you never know if something is blocking inside the radiator or the heater core.
most reccomend a flush every 24-30K... i went up to 127K, but atleast 15 of those were really hot miles.
i'd reccomend the flush and an ac delco thermostat. take it in if need be. but its well worth it.
