Is this cause by a blown head gasket? (PIC)
Saturday, May 07, 2005 9:34 PM
I just bought a engine from the wreakers for cheap, i took off the head today and noticed this, one cylinder is all wet and others were dry, even the spark plug was wet. I didnt notice any cracks in the head. so i'm guessing head gasket????? what else could cause this?

I would say its either the head gasket or piston rings. Have you noticed any smoke at all coming from your tailpipe?

Your headgakset from the photo appears to be complete, I dont see any chucnks out.

Are you sure it isnt oil soaked, if so I would remove your pistions and replace all the rings.

i have no idea if there was smoke, i bought the motor from the wreakers, so i never saw it running.

and thats not the head gasket, i already took it off, thats just the inprint of the headgasket on the head.

I did a compression test on the engine before i took it apart. I connected the flywheel and starter and cranked it, all cylinders were arount 200 -/+

If i were to look at the head gasket, what would i be looking for? would the metal ring on the headgasket be cracked or somthing?

it may not be anything you guys mentioned..

If the engine lays on it side oil will leak into the cyl. happened to me before on an engine I had for my beretta way back in the day.

Chances are the car it came out of was totaled so don't expect a "perfect" engine. You go 2 choices.. either A. clean it up slap it in or B. Replace the parts

beer is like a chick.. well not really its just beer, it be cool thou huh?

could be what he said. if not since the compression was ok (which excess oil can still get by and the compression show normal) could be valve seals and or guides. I notice the third cylinder over has some oil on one of its intake valves as well. Dont think its the head gasket it looks pretty well complete no deformations or pieces blown out.

I think there is a bad ring on the cylinder most left, completely oil-coated, while the rest are OK.

Also, could be a mis-firing coil pack, 2nd from the right is also a 'lil messy.

With the contrast and light it is hard to see stuff there. But it appears okay.
Could be valve seals like someone said. Is it a turbo engine? Whats the intake look like?
