timing chain tensioner wont pop back out?
Thursday, May 05, 2005 9:36 AM
I took the chain tensioner out to get the water pump off. When I put it back on I noticed it dosnt pop back out. Im assuming this is because its fluid driven and the fluid has been drained out? Is there anything I need to do to get this primed so it worksor do I just leave it and let it do its thing when I am done and start the car up?

is the tensioner pushed as far in as possible????..............if so then put the tensioner back in and take a flat headed screw driver and push the shaft in.....it should pop back out....sort of like an emergency brake .......push to apply then push and release to release....

I do believe I pushed it all the way in, it started to pop out a little bit but no wheres near as much as it should. It appears to be hydraulic. Can I assume that because I took it off and lost all the fluid it wont operate until it gets more fluid?

Yup.
Oil pressure will push it out the rest of the way....unless it is faulty.(You will know within 1 to 2 minutes if it is working.)

don't take the chance, you have taken atleast 3 hours to get this far, go get a new tens, and maybe even a chain, if you have anywhere near 100k miles get them you will not regret it.

Hit 200 NA it broke once, Hit 213 it broke again,
Hitting 300 NA is further away than I thought.

yeah, what if the thing is bound up and oil pressure will not help? Then you lose timing and a few valves and pistons....a lifter or two, and maybe even a cam.

Ouch...just buy a new tensioner.

only thing you can do and I always suggest this is .. pull the ignition module plug (the one that attachs to where the plugs go), then crank the car for about 1 minute, let it set repeat again .. you should have enough oil by then to start it up .. there should be little to no noise from the chain area. if you get a rattling noise shut the engine off and pull it back apart and replace the tens. other wise you run the risk of messing your motor up.

alot of oil may come out, if you don't have it closed up yet .. just go buy a new tens. less than $30.00 for it @ any parts store. be on the safe side.

They have them listed at both my local autozone and advanced auto parts for 50 dollars and a 2 day wait.

Ok so I have the pump all back in place and I turned it over with the ignition module plug disconected so I could see if the tensioner will pop back out. The tensioner pops out but it dosnt seem very firm and I took a video of it and it definatly makes a clicking noise like some one said it would if the tensioner wasnt working. Now, if I have any valve damage how will it sound when its turning over? Will it be a obvious thing or can it start out very minor and un-noticeable?
