i know, i know, it's not a j-body, but im sure you guys could help. it's an 86 Buick century custom with the good ol 2.5L iron duke engine. it's been running like it's got a cylinder out. i was pretty sure it wasnt the plugs, because i just changed them about a month before it started doing this (it's been sitting for a while now, im in denial that he's hurting). i've finally decided to go about fixing him, so i went out and got new plugs and a new air filter. the wires are pretty new, so im not to worried about them. so i pulled the old plugs, put in the new ones, and im lookin at the old plugs and the #3 plug is black. all of the others are healthyer whitish tan. so i know it's the #3 cylinder. so i put the new plugs in, crank her up, and it's still doin it. i warm it up, rev it a couple times, drive it around the block once, park 'im, and pull the plugs. again, all fine but the #3 plug, wich is just as bad as the old one i just pulled. it's a dark dark black, and it's dry. not the wet oil black that you'd see with an oil leak. could a busted head gasket do this? i figure it would cause the carbon build up, but im not seeing the teltail "white smoke" sign that it's messed up. im at a loss, guys. i thought it was the ignition system, but im not sure now. it doesnt look like the plug was firing, but now else would the build up get dry? help!

it's not how fast you go, it's how you get there that counts.

AutoZone now has lifetime ignition wires made in USA....
Your first stop will be there, I hope.
ok, it's throttle body injected, so the only fuel problem i can see is the valve not opening, or being so corroded that air just doesnt go in too well. as for the wires, i switched two of the wires around, and the wires are just fine. #3 plug still wasnt working. soooo, i think im going to replace the distributor cap, and we'll see what happens!

Some way can you ground the #3 plug, like laying it
across some of the engine metal, fire the engine, and
see if it is jumping spark across the electrodes ?
i've got an inline spark tester. put that on, nothin
