Anyone ever change the fuel filter on their 03 cavy? I have hit 50,000 miles and would like to change mine myself. Just wondered if anyone had any advice.

Dude its easy as 123 all u do is jack up the back end of your car and u will see it right behind the rear axel all u need is a flathead screwdriver to undo the clamp and a wrench to undo the bolt the screws into the filter. But before u do this remove your fuel pump fuse and turn it over a couple of times this will release the pressure in the fuel system so when u take off your filter u dont get a gas shower. hope this helps

agreed. if they had a lifetime filter, every manufacturor would be using the same thing. but think about it. its a filter. compare it to a pool filter, air filter, any filter you can think of. they FILTER things out, so if its filtering things out, then its going to have buildup regardless.

Heres the proof from the GM service website http://service.gm.com

Fuel Filter Replacement
Removal Procedure

Important: There is no service interval for fuel filter replacement. Only replace the fuel filter if the filter is restricted. Inspect the fuel tank internally and clean the fuel tank if you find a restricted fuel filter.

1. Relieve the fuel system pressure. Refer to Fuel Pressure Relief Procedure .
2. Raise the vehicle. Refer to Lifting and Jacking the Vehicle in General Information.

3. Disconnect the fuel filter fitting using a back-up wrench.

4. Disconnect the quick connect fitting from the fuel filter. Refer to Quick Connect Fitting(s) Service (Plastic Collar) .
5. Remove the fuel filter.

Installation Procedure

Object Number: 288310 Size: SH
Click here for detailed picture of above image.
1. Remove the protective caps from the new fuel filter.
2. Install the fuel filter (2) in the same position as the old fuel filter.
3. Connect the fuel filter quick connect fitting. Refer to Quick Connect Fitting(s) Service (Plastic Collar) .

Notice: Use the correct fastener in the correct location. Replacement fasteners must be the correct part number for that application. Fasteners requiring replacement or fasteners requiring the use of thread locking compound or sealant are identified in the service procedure. Do not use paints, lubricants, or corrosion inhibitors on fasteners or fastener joint surfaces unless specified. These coatings affect fastener torque and joint clamping force and may damage the fastener. Use the correct tightening sequence and specifications when installing fasteners in order to avoid damage to parts and systems.
4. Connect the fuel filter fitting (3) using a back-up wrench.

Tighten
Tighten the fuel filter fitting to 27 N·m (20 lb ft).
5. Lower the vehicle.
6. Connect the negative battery cable.
7. Inspect for fuel leaks using the following procedure:
1. Turn ON the ignition, with the engine OFF for 2 seconds.
2. Turn OFF the ignition for 10 seconds.
3. Turn ON the ignition, with the engine OFF.
4. Inspect for fuel leaks.

The newer GM vehicles do not have an out of tank fuel filter, the only filter is the pump pickup sock.

Fuel Filter Replacement
Removal Procedure

Where on the site is this info contained? Do I need to sign up for a password or something. It almost looks like a site for technicians.

Just to make sure I am right, but it appears that the fuel tank as to be removed in order to access the fuel filter? Someone mentioned having done this already. How difficult was this procedure?

yes you need a password to get on there thats why i just posted the instructions and highlighted the part that GM says that the fuel filter does require changing. The comment about filter in the tank is not for the j-body thats for the newer GM cars. The fuel filter in cavs and sunfires is on the outside by the tank.

So how often should a fuel filter be replaced? My car is up to 100 000 kilometres and I never changed it.
Re: fuel filter

I change mine once a year, just for good measure, and since its only an $11 part its not a big deal. I usually run a can of Sea foam with a full tank of gas before I change it out.

Re: fuel filter

Because there is no listed interval doesn't mean you SHOULDN'T replace it... but to go more than 25-30k miles without changing a filter that cost less than $10 is foolish in my opinion.

I always change my gas filter every year, regardless of how many miles usually at least 10,000 miles. Once i changed the filter and 4 months later it was clogged. First time that has happened to me. It was on my 98 Z-71, it couldn't get it past 70mph and it got worse until i figured out what was wrong. Remember, u fill up with gas that is supposed to be filtered into your tank. Then the fuel pump itself also has a filter( not replaceable, then it goes through the fuel filter(replaceable), and into the injectors which sometimes have built in filters (not replaceable). Remember gas is not always clean. U need filters to clean the gas and replace the ones u can periodically. Also ur gas tank collects crud inside and also the gasoline station tanks aren't always clean. Also stick with one gas station that is reliable with ur car.

gas is NEVER clean have you seen the inside of a gas station tank? all that sediment and crap its crazy sure it may be "clean" when it leaves the factory, but when its dropped into stations its far from clean! hence why we have filters! cheaper gas you buy also plays a big role in the detergents in it and so on.. It's been said try to fill up at the same station using the same pump to cut down on alot of things and don't use cheap gas i.e. racetrac,wal-mart, BP(in texas), H.E.B., just to name a few.. all they do is buy up leftover gas from companies and mix it all together and sometimes its watered down to add $ (best buddy owns a few gas stations, and my roomie works for dresser wayne, largest pump maker in the nation) I my self used what ever gas I could lay my hands on, hell cheaper thebetter but now that I've learned I won't do that again! plus I add my acetone into my gas also after each fill.. works wonders!

and good ol' seafoam into my intake to clean internals

beer is like a chick.. well not really its just beer, it be cool thou huh?
