It was wet out tonight when I left work, so I happened to spin my tires a little when I left my parking spot, and I noticed a repetitive clunk while the tire spun. So, at the next stop I figured I would try again and see what happened. Sure enough, it did ever time I spun the tires in first gear. It is a repetitive clunk, like "clunk, clunk, clunk, clunk" Not just one or two.
It will stop clunking if I either let off the gas, or shift to second gear. It will not clunk in second even if I keep the tires spinning.
Any ideas?

manual or automatic
if automatic ... the clunking is the reverse or neutral going into drive and then you slamming on the gas right away.
Manual ... it is probably a neutral drop

Was that an option on Cavaliers??
If so, what years had this option available?
I know it's JUST a Cavalier, and I'm sorry if I hurt your ego.
I don't think that it is traction control, even if the car has it. This is the first time in 3 years it has ever clunked when the tires spin. So I just can't see that being what is making the noise.

control arm bushings maybe?? Do you have any wheel hop when they spin?&?
Try it in low or second range if automatic and see if you hear it.

hopping=good way to break stuff....that could cause a noise like that
traction control became an option on 00-up i belive....my car doesnt have it, my friends 02 base model has it, althought it doesnt seem like it does much
It's a 99, and it's a manual. I doubt it has traction control, but I really don't know for sure. I don't think there is any wheel hop, it makes the clunk even if I do a small spin of the tires. It is getting any OLF on Thursday so I will get it checked out then.
