2.4 coolant resevoir overflowing?
Monday, April 25, 2005 9:52 AM
I just got back from about a 1 and a half hour round trip and when I got out of my car I noticed the coolant was running out of the resevoir like the car was overheating but the temperature gauge sais the engine was only a little over 195. The engine did start to run a little warmer than normal towards the end of the trip but never made it to where it would should boil over. This is on my 98 Z24 with just over 92,000 miles. Any thoughts on why it would boil over if the engine isnt running real hot ?

You might want to check yur water pump. Mine went out and my car didn't overheat either. The motion of the vehicle on the road kept the engine cool. Sorry for the bad news. I ad five years on the car with 70,000 miles. If you have the dealership do the work, get prepared for a bill around $800. If you have the time and proper tools, you could do it yourself. Long hard job on a 2.4L. Good Luck!!

Looks like im not going to be using them for a while

I forgot to add that I will be doing this myself. Does anyone know of any good write ups on this or have any tips? Is there anything I will need or should replace other than the water pump while I am doing this?

rj,
The only thing I can tell you about changing out the water pump is that it is a very long process. From what the dealship told me is that you have to remove the timeing belt cover, loosen the timing belt than remove the water pump. It is more difficult on the 2.4L to remove the water pump than on the 2.2L. That is one reason the dealship charges so much for labor. When I had mine replaced, they informed me it wuld have been around $400 less if I had the 2.2L.
All I can say is that if you plan on doing it yourself, good luck to you! Hope you don't run into any problems.

I would be sure that its the water pump before you go replace it. Its not really fun.

My coolant overflows a little bit after I drive- I just think its because I have it filled up close to the top- my water pump has been replaced, so I think its fine.

Could be a sticky thermostat. try replacing the thermostat first, it's the cheapest fix - like $20 for the thermostat + $5 for the gasket

This happened on my old Civic, but only if I was doing stop-and-go driving. It turns out the radiator fan motor was burned out, so it wasn't cooling properly.

If you attempt to do the water pump yourself, you better know how to properly time the engine, or you will have a new engine on your list of things you need to buy.

I have my cooling fan wired to a switch in the cockpit. I started to here a high pitch noise coming from the area of my water pump last summer. Now back on topic. Does no one have any information on replacing the water pump? No I have no idea how to time a FI vehichle but I was hoping on marking or bolting up the cam gears to keep the timing the same. Any information on that would be great as well. Thanks.

You cannot just bolt the cam gears in place and expect the timing to remain the same. You have to remove the chain in order to swap the pump, thus you have to remove the tensioner, which means you must re-set the timing. Not hard to do, just make sur eyou have a Haynes, or Chiltons, or even the GM shop manual. It will give you all the steps.

I have set the timing on the 2.4L about 5 times in the past 6 months...have not had a problem yet, so the manuals do their job.

Change your reservoir cap

I've had the same problem, as described above:

a) The car used to run a little hot (like the 12:02 in the clock), sinbce it was new (40.000 miles on it)
b) One day I made a short drive (2 miles) and suddenly the gauge reached the end of the white line ( '98 Cavalier 2.2 litre, 5-speed);
c) Then, after 2 minutes of hell, it returned to the "safe" zone.
d) When I checked the reservoir, it was empty, and the reservoir tank was completely covered with coolant, but the car was OK at TEMP gauge.
e) This occurred in a regular basis.
f) No chocolate oil, no oily water
g) Yesterday, I replaced the cap, because I was thinking on a damaged cap. I filled the reservoir until the water reached the "full" mark, and started the engine with the cap off, thus allowing the water to be out of air.
h) When the water became hot, the reservoir made a click click click noise (?), which I explained to myself as if there were a valve inside of it,
i) After the water ceased to making bubbles, I replaced the cap and drove the car. All was OK.
j) Today at morning, I started and drove the car again.
k) Suddenly, after 1 mile, the gauge began to rise until it almost reached the red line !!!!.
l) I had to stop the car and waited for it to cool to a safe level.
m) This occurred three times, until I loosen the reservoir cap.
n) Once the reservoir cap was loose, I could drive the car with the water temp gauge at the "safe" level. But the reservoir is empty.

o) Next step I'll take is to change the thermostat.
p) What do you think?

update Cap was not needed, Flushed the system, Filled with new fluids 50/50 mix, Also check to see if the sensor
on the bottom of the overflow tank is not gummed up. No more overflow, But the temp gauge is showing a ruff est of 160 to 180
is this normal?
