is still using plastic intake manifolds?
The Cavaliers have it, and so do the Impalas, didnt GM learn a few yearsback with the Pontiacs plastic IMs DONT work.

Why are you saying they don't work? How often do you hear about people's intake manifolds breaking??
gm is using plastic plenums, all the intakes are aluminum.

The 3.8's back when they first started had issues. The Nylon technology used today by GM is years better than the first manifolds.
They are cheaper to make, they make more HP than aluminum also. There is no heat soak with nylon.
the nylon ones melt too if the car have resricted exhaust.

i don't see how a plastic intake will add ponies. but i can say it's easier and cheaper to mould. let's just assume that GM saves $10 on each one. you take that ten bucks, and multiply it by how many cars are made, let's just assume they make 200,000 in that year. if the variables would be correct they have just saved two million bucks by changing one thing in the design.

You're not into cars are you? Any metal retains a certain amount of heat. Aluminium retains heat. Nylon retains hardly any heat. Go take a ride in a muscle car with an aluminum intake and get out and put your hand on the intake and tell me if it burns you.
Do the same in a Cav or a LS1/LS2 powered car and see if you can touch the intake. If you can, it means the intake charge is staying cooler. Cooler air means more power.
take one off a car and you will see why gm is using plastic. Most of them are a lot more complex then a aluminum
plenum. It would cost twice as much and may not even be possible to make on out of aluminum.

Nobody said that it adds power.
It's cheap, it's reliable for a very decent airflow rate at up to 500 HP, it doesn't melt, and it easier to mold. GM wont make an aluminum manifold so the drivers don't feel like the car is "cheap" because the car is "cheap".

I don't see any problems with the plastic intake. In fact I think it's better because it doesn't heat up and it doesn't rust. Never heard of anyone with a busted intake.

The 3.8 have a small problem melting by the throttle bodie where the EGR tube runs into it. That is the only one I know of that is having any problems.
