I apoligize if this is the wrong section, or if this is covered somewhere else (I did search on "engine removal").
I'd like to remove the engine and transmission from my 1996 Cavalier 2-door (it has the base 2.2 and a 5 speed manual transmission).
First, I want to be able to push it in and out of my garage for a bit, so I believe I need to first remove the axles, remove the splined ends and bolt them back in to support the wheel bearings, etc.).
Then I'd like to pull the engine and transmission, preferably together if possible, but I'm game to do it in pieces if necessary. I'm not worried about the wiring, just the heavy bits.
Can I pull the engine and trans in one unit? From the top or bottom of the car? Is there a preferred way.
I will not be keeping or reinstalling the engine and transmission that is pulled (it's going to the wreckers).
Thanks.
Well I have helped pull an engine from a 97 Cavalier before and it was pulled through the top.
I dont see how you can do it any other way if its going to be done in a driveway.
I assume you have an impact gun and socket, as those bolts for the exhaust, you need an impact gun, also some of the bolts that bolt the trans to engine are torqued with about 150-180 foot pounds, hope your strong, cause there aint no way in hell to get an impact gun down in some of those places.

Soak any stuck bolts/nuts with WD40 for a couple of days after cleaning them off with a wire brush (renewing the WD40 occassionally). Then use a length of pipe (conduit works, too) to extend the "handle" of your ratchet for added torque.
If the bolt or nut is REALLY stuck, tho, you may end up shearing off part of it with the added torque the pipe gives you...
I don't think you'd be able to pull the tranny out with the engine attached... but I could be wrong.
Good luck!
