4spd Autotrans - problem changing filter sleeve
Saturday, April 09, 2005 3:06 PM
I drained the fluid, dropped the pan and removed the filter. Between the filter and the transmission there is a small ring or sleeve. My filter kit comes with a replacement. My problem is that I can't seem to get the old one out and it's too mangled to just leave in at this point. The screwdriver prying method in the Chilton's manual is not working. How can I remove this thing?

Use a small cape chisel it will lift the edge of the seal up then you use needle nose plyers to pull the seal out from the case. You have to get between the inner edge of the seal and the case other wise the seal will be driven deeper and be harder to get out.But even then it will come out. Also use petrolium jelly as assembly lube on the new seal and on the tube that comes from the new filter that fits into the seal.

I chiseled the ridge with a screwdriver for a cew cm. Then I grabbed the raised edge with a visegrips and twisted it so that the wall of the sleeve collapsed, it fell right out. I used some ATF to lube the new sleeve before inserting it. Even then, I couldn't push it in by hand. I used the wooden handle of a screwdriver to tap around in a circle until the sleeve was seated. There was no way in hell the old one was coming out with prying, it was just stuck.

Yeah, I could have, but I'm pretty sure it's included in the kit for a reason. Also, I found tons of sludge in the pan. There were gobs of filings stuck on the magnet. This was at about 77K miles. Anyone who says it's a bad idea to change the tranny fluid is out of their mind. The fluid I drained looked like Hershey's syrup. The new stuff was a bright red color. I have no idea why the Chilton's manual would call for 4 quarts. I did some reading that suggested 7-8 quarts. At 4 qts, it sounded like crap. I put another four in there and it ran beautifully.

Hey solid sounds like what happened to me couldn't get that damn sleeve off, sludgy tranny fluid, the best stuff to use is that cd2 engine degreaser. And when I added four quarts and drove it, it sounded like the teeth on the gears were grinding, so i added more plus that Lucas for tranny sh!t. SUCKS not having a dipstick to check the fluids!!!!

There might not be a dipstick, but there is a way to check the level.

The manual I have says to have the transmission warmed up but not hot and have it on level ground, there is a small plug under the passenger side axle shaft where it comes out of the transmission, remove that and it should be full if fluid just comes out that hole. If it comes pouring out it is too full, if not at all it is still too low,

That's a pretty stupid way of knowing if the transmission is full. I already put some nice stains on my parents' driveway, no thanks. Mine is probably slightly over filled but it runs fine so I'm not going to mess with it. I did use engine degreaser on the pan, it made the pan look brand new. Then I rinsed it with water and let it air dry. Did your pan have a lot of thick sludge stuck to the magnet? Did your manual also call for 4 quarts?

It does seem like a stupid way, but that is how the manual says to do it.

Mine had just a little bit of sediment in the bottom, which is normal for automatics, but too much definitely is not.

I will have to look to see what it says, I think it was wrong when I did it a couple years ago. I ended up with 6+ total before it came out the hole.

I am going to change mine again soon anyways.

Too little fluid is bad... but so is too much fluid. Either check it now, or start saving for a new tranny. Trust me.

That sleeve is a PITA eh? I had a hard time with mine too.. eventually I got it.
