Check Engine Already!!!???? - Maintenance and Repair Forum

Hey guys,
Well after 70,000km in my '03 sunfire thought it would never happen but it did-my check engine light is on. It came on while I was driving and it's staying on. There's no difference in the performance what so ever but I have a feeling it's emissions related. Does anyone here know how I can check for codes or anything, I know on my '93 grand am if I short the A and B terminals in the OBD port I can get the code but I doubt that will work in my sunfire. I'm stumped as to why now, can an oxygen sensor, egr, or cat be going or gone bad already?. Has anyone experienced this problem yet and should I be worried. Dealer wants $100 to hook up to scan tool which is BS!!!
Any idea's as to what it might be would be greatly apprieated
Thanks guys
take it to autozone, they'll do it for free.

Uh, your car is still underwarranty until 100,000km for all engine relateld issues. Go back at your dealer. EVERYTHING is covered under warranty, no exception. They suck.
Yeah in the States but not here in Canada.
Warranty covers everything til 60,000km, power-train til 100,000km. Dealer said it's probably emissions and that isn't covered now. And $100 + tax to check!
go to autozone like the dude said...find out what it is, then advise later..

Yeah, no autozone in canada.
But aren't emission-related parts guaranteed for even longer?? Check out your manual.
Or, you could do what I've done in the past: go out at a canadian tire, buy an OBD2 scanner, then return it back the same afternoon, it's like 200$ if I'm right but you can get a full refund.
Find a good friend in a garage. they will charge less than 100$. I can get the code scan for 10$. It take like 5 min so 1200$ an hour to check codes is real BS.

I've got a scan tool, any chance you are in GTA niagara area?
I'm located in Toronto, but I think I might do what GBRO said, buy use and return. I'll post up the codes as soon as I get them.
Thatnks for ur input guys
Sorry for not getting back sooner but here's the update. I figured I'd reset the ECM and then wait for the code to come on again and--it hasn't! I drove down to niagra falls from Toronto over the weekend which is a 1-2 hr drive and no engine light. I do a lot of hard driving so I'm guessing it provided a too rich signal to the O2 sensor and thats why it threw the code in the first place. I dunno just a guess but it's gone now. If it comes on again I'll connect it to a scan tool.
FYI
Emissions warranty in Canada is until 135k km. I had my cat converter replaced for free at 133k km a few months ago on my 2002 cav
how do you reset the ECU?

Just disconnect batt for 30-60 sec and reconnect and it's reset.

R u sure about that because when I took it in he told me emissons related problems would not be covered after 60,000km. Did they check it for free as well?

Ya I had this done a few months ago, all for free (they replaced an o2 sensor as well). Of course this is up here in Toronto, not sure about the states.
Yeah I'm in toronto too. I'll try another dealer if it happens again. Thanks
Dumb suggestion, LOL, but make sure to check all the fluids. My 97 Cavalier triggers the check engine light when the brake fluid gets a little low. Then the suckish part about it is after you fill the brake fluid back up it takes a few drives for the darn thing to go off. I keep after it now when it needs a little bit about once every 2-3 months but dang it is annoying. hehe

Takes quite a bit longer than 30-60 seconds, mine takes a good hour or two. Hell to get it to reset last time I just left the damn thing unplugged overnight because 45 minutes wasn't enough
