i got a 2.2 engine in my garage, but i'm not sure what year its from, i'm sure its from a second gen, either 92-94, the oil filter goes directly onto the block. here are some pics, can anyone tell the exact year from the pics?? Or, where is the Serial # loacted on the block, i couldnt find one.
P.S. i asked this question a while ago and was given this link, but it doesnt work

Are you sure it's from a 2nd gen? I ask because it looks identical to the one in my '95 3rd gen... Though I know they used the 2.2L OHV in both 2nd and 3rd gens, maybe there is some distinguishing marks?
the only real distinguishing things are the alternator bracket. the 2nd gen's had a weird "v" shaped bracket, and the intake manifold tell's me it's not TBI or SFI. can't see the exhaust manifold. this engine is 94-97. i believe the serial number is around where the tranny bellhousing bolts up to the block.
i'm pretty sure its a 2nd gen, i saw the car and it wasn't a 3rd gen. he was doing a 3.1 swap. i'll check the number later on
The Trottle Body, Intake, valve cover, the back side, and the transmission look identicle to my 96 Cav 2.2... Another vote for 94-97 engine.
so there is no chance its a 93 and under???????
black valve cover.. it's a 2.2 from a second gen me thinks.. is there a vin number or identification number on there? should be on the front of your block etched in

i can't find it anywhere, the block has alot of rust and dirt on it sor its hard to find a number, does anyone know where the ID# is exactly? I know for a fact that it came out of a 2nd gen, so that rules out 95-97...so its 94 or older. here is a pic of the exhaust manafold...
i would say by looking at the alternator bracket in the photo its a 92-93.
from 92-97 they all look visually the same, just the internials are differant from 94-97.

Looking to the right of the exhaust, all the way back where the block meets the trans there is a inch wide machined area, the numbers are there.
you can tell its a 2nd gen by the tensioner plate......um i would say anywhere from 92-94 being MPFI and all
im saying its a 1990-1993 2.2.....it has the newer TB setup, so its not 88 or 89 2nd gen
it can't be a 90-91 because it doesn't have a oil filter adapter, and 94 has a roller cam,
it can not be a 90-91 2.2l because its multi port . they changed the style of alternator brackets in 94,and has the wrong tensinior pulley to be a 95-97. so it leaves you to be either a 92-93.

Does that number i posted say what year it is, it was right where the tranny meets the block,
the VIN should be stamped on the block and 8th digit from the last one is the model year..
eg. 1g1jc5246T710001 in this case t would mean 1996.
s = 1995
t = 1996
v = 1997
w = 1998
x = 1999
y = 2000
you can also find it right before where the bellhousing/tranny meets the block.
hope that helps.
