ECOTEC engine noises
Thursday, September 09, 2004 12:04 PM
I did some searching around in the forums, but didn't really come up with any answers.

Does anyone else have semi-loud noises coming from their eco's? Sounds like some bad valve tapping to me. I've heard that its just how the engine is, and that it may be a problem. I don't want to go through all the hassles of bringing the car in to get looked at if I don't have to.

Anyone have any input on their ecotec engines? Thanks.
My ECO is so quiet at idle that you can hardly tell the car is on. On the other hand it can get loud at WOT.
if i remember correctly, there is a recall on this very issue. i have the same problem with mine. sounds almost like a knocking sound, but dosen't do it all the time. i hate it, and wanna get it fixed, but on the up-side, it wont hurt anything if not fixed.

mine is very rapid tapping from the valves. I get a knocking though if its quiet and I turn of the engine, its like 5 rapid knocks after you turn it off.
Hey
My car makes a sorta ticking sound but its mainly when the engine isnt warm.....you can still hear it kinda but only at low rpms...and at idle theres a ticking sound that a dealership said its the fuel injectors and my cousin said the ecotec is kinda a noisey engine even tho its suppose to not be so GM says. Then theres the rummor of the so called bad timing chain that breaks around 38,000 miles on the 02's. I hope its false b/c Im almost at 31,000 miles. Thats all that ive heard so far.

My car also makes a funny noise that reminds me of when I changed the alternator on my second gen Z with a "high performance" alternator and it kinda make a whiny noise and my ecotec does it when slowing down from 5mp to stop and I can hear it when coast at 25 mph sometimes but not all the time and its not really loud I have to have the windows down or no music playing to hear it. .........could it just be the alternator???

Has anyone noticed a drop in mpg along with their "ticking" noise. I keep a pretty close eye on how much gas i use and it seems like im getting like 30 less miles to the tank. It could all just be in my head tho.

I have noticed that too. I keep checking my tripometer. It eats up so much gas now. I thought I was going crazy.
mine knocks when its cold outside. I was told by others Eco owners it was doing the same. But when hot you dont notice it.

I know that the dealership had 1 Eco that the timing chain snaped out. They had to redo the engine and the head.

Was around 70 000km.
Does anyone have a solution to this problem? I tried some fuel injector cleaner didnt seem to help. Now im thinking maybe fuel filter or O2 sensor? I'm about to take it to the dealership but after 3 tries over 2 weeks to get rid of a suspension squeak i don't know if i should trust them with an engine problem.

I made a post about using some valvemedic to quiet the noise the other day here, I thought it worked, the next day the noise was back. I changed the fuel filter, tried higher octane gas, and used fuel injector cleaner a few times. Nothing works. I would love to know the solution to this too!
yeah, in general mine is just noisy. When I'm at an idle, its quiet, but as soon as I start driving its just loud. I get the ticking sounds as well, and I've noticed the mileage getting worse. Glad im not the only one.

i get that tick, and rattle, and pulse sound from my engine. Im glad im not the only one, was starting to worry.

Also, just to let everyone know i have 42000 miles on my eco and its running strong. Been running synthetic oil through it since 15000 miles, and have run 44k through it 3 times. A guy here in Colorado has 60000+ and is still running strong, so no timing chain problems for us *knocks on wood*
it could very well be detniation. hell at 10to1 compression its possiable using 87 octane. i use 89 and mine doesnt tick or nothing sounds very quite. and about the timing chain breaking i havent hear of that my car has 55k miles and chain is fine.

well i just pulled my plugs today to put in my denso's and the only thing is that they are covered with a little black soot, but this is due to my car running rich. My car has sounded like this since i bought it but more noticeable with the full exhaust and intake.
my womans 02 ls sport sorta is noisey at times. (30k miles)

i am not worried about it though. but i will watch this thread of anything comes up.

the whole timing chain snapping thing is like the #3 rod bearing in the 2.4;s- u hear about it hear and there through word of mouth.

2003 Cav 5 spd Ecotec, NO TICKING SOUNDS AT ALL. No knocking. This thing has 56,200 Miles on it, and I have had no motor related problems at all. Just wondering Maybe its the oil??
