A.C. Usage
How to use the A.C. efficiently.
Using the A.C. can consume a lot of fuel and it also can save fuel too. In city driving, having the windows rolled down and A.C. off will save you on fuel consumption. But when you are on the highway, having the windows rolled up and A.C. on will save more fuel then having the windows down and ARC off.
Why? Aerodynamics. When you have the windows down, you cause more “aero drag” and in return cause the engine to work harder to achieve or maintain a certain highway speed and so, you will consume more fuel.
If you can drive in the city with out the A.C. on, you can save on fuel consumption by a lot. But if the heat is unbearable, then keep it on, to avoid a heat stroke.
If you are going to use the A.C. try these tips:
1. Open the window(s) for at least (5min) to let the heat out.
2. Turn the A.C. on with vent open to let fresh air in.
3. After the temperature is acceptable in (10 min), set to “recirculation” mode so A.C. does not work harder.
4. In long trips and in “recirculation” mode, you may want to open the windows once in a while to let fresh air in. In this mode, the air inside the cabin gets reused over and over. This air will get you drowsy as you are driving in a long distance.

Good info Mr. GW! I'm currently doing some datalogging so I can compare the engine load at certain RPM highway situations and compare to after the new clutch and lighter flywheel are in, so I'll let you know my findings.
15.3 @ 89.97mph, 14's on the way?

2.Observe the Speed Limit
Gas mileage decreases rapidly at speeds above 60 mph. Each 5 mph you drive over 60 mph is like paying an additional $0.10 per gallon for gas. Observing the speed limit is also safer.
Fuel Economy Benefit 7-23% Equivalent Gasoline Savings: $0.10-$0.34/gallon
can i get a bigger version of the chart so i can see where the most effecient speeds are? oh, and is this chart for a 2.2L 3spd auto, 5 spd etc? if not where can i get one for the 3spd auto?
thanks

i just wanna know,
my car is a cavalier 97 2.2 manual 5 speed
it is normal i dont have a shift light ? ? ?

Sorry dude, that's the biggest that it can go.

No, it is not normal. It should light somewhere on the IC. It only lights up when the computer thinks its that it's on optimal fuel efficiency, depending on the amount of throttle input. If you are at wide open throttle, then it will only light up before redline.

STILL NO STICKY????
Does DAVE or the moderators pay for gas or what?????
Could Dave be using the "Premium funds" to pay for his gas, therefore this info would be use less for him!
WTF does it take to make this shite stick up there, I mean who's Azz do you have to kiss to get it up there?
I sent them emails and no replys. This has been on for more than a week. I tell ya the bureaucracy never ends huh
Sorry people had to vent

well that's ok that it is as big as it can get. but can you tell me what kind of transmission it's for. casue i'd think different gearing woudl mean different effectienty at different speeds.
DV,
It does not matter what transmission it is. As long as you are keeping the RPMS high, expect to have a low fuel economy.
In other words, if you want to keep the maximum fuel efficiency and still want to eat up miles. 55-60mph is the ideal speed ofcourse with the highest gear available.

For who ever made this a sticky. The JBO and I thank you.
We have to make every bit of fuel last, to show the oil companies that there will be a lower demand.
Well... atleast try. If all the JBO members saves a gallon of fuel, we can send a signal not a loud one, but a signal that we are doing our part to bring less demand, therefore lower the fuel costs.
Hey it's a start.
Please continue and contribute.

The tornado fuel saver does increase milage, but you lose power, air already circulates going into the engine, doesnt need that. You get a little increase in milage because of the air restriction, less air will result in less fuel thanks to your computer, but in turn, less power.
Okay, a few things.
Overdrive is generally considered to be a gear where the ratio is less than 1:1 (ie 0.93 engine revolutions produde 1.0 revolutions at the output shaft of the transmission). Some cars have electrical overdrive in 1 or two gears. I can offer no explanation how that works.
Now, I get very consistent gas mileage with my cavalier. 27MPG and it never changes. Driving fast, city driving, and extended highway cruising. Always the same. I also got great gas mileage in my 6 cyl grand am at 80MPH.

lol, totally false! If you have Pure water (only H20) that means that it will FREEZE exactly at 0* celcius, and will BOIL exactly at 100* celcius. Any impurities in water can change that ever so slightly.
Here are some ways I have adjusted to high fuel costs, and to save fuel, and the car itself:
*Plan ahead and make as few trips as possible. Avoiding crowds and picking up items at off peak shopping times are not only less stressful but you can save yourself time for goofing around on the .org.
*Pack a lunch and kick back under a shade tree. Try not leaving your workplace for your meal breaks.
*Go inside, don't use the drive-thru. Spare your head gasket at the same time.
*Keep the tires properly inflated and rotated.
*Easy does it- as stated above, drive sensibly.
*Fill the tank when it gets to 1/4. Our cars run on gasoline, not sediments in the bottom of the tank. You gotta fill it anyways, may as well get a fuller tank out of a $20 bill.

The amount that you save on gas by putting the tornado in will never justify spending ($70) for 50 cents worth of aluminum. From the looks of that product, it is as legit as the label on the box "As seen on T.V."

You get great gas mileage on the V6 GA because of the tall 4th gear it has (Overdrive). Your rpms in hovering under 2500 at 80mph. I rented one of those to go on a trip, the engine could not be more relaxed. It is the like the 6th gear on the F-body cars.
The thing is to achive the lowest rpms at the highest speed. By 70mph you causing a lot of drag and in return you ask for more power (to sustain speed) and use up more fuel.
Do a 300 mile highway test, in our J-body cars. One 65mph and one at 75-80mph. You will see a huge diffrence in MPG.

this is a newb question but why do manuals tend to get better gas milage than auto's? Is it because of the extra gears (5spds instead of 3) so the engine is turning less rpm's?
Correct,
The higher the gear you are in, the taller it is, hence the better gas mileage. As long you you are driving at the lowest rpms, you useing up less fuel.
Some cars have 6-speed gears, but all are short, including the 6th. Some cars you can run 60mph and you will see 3000rpms. Why bother having a extra gear (6th) if its not going to work like a Overdrive? I think the Corvette and F-body w/ V8 has it down right. That is why a 405 HP V8 can get 30mpgs on the HW.

At 70mph my car usually gets ~33mpg... so I guess I don't fall into that lower arc. I routinely drive 326 miles from Virginia to Lexington Ky at a constant rate of 70mph... I always get there one 1 tank of gas with PLENTY to spare.
my economics teacher was saying something about saving money if you only put like $10 in at a time and just fill up more often as opposed to filling up all at once. only i was half asleep so i missed her explanation of why. any economists out there that can verify that for me?
also gas prices are usually raised on friday night in prep for the busy traffic weekend so i heard somewhere it's best to buy on a thurs. don't really know if there's any truth to that either but it sounds logical.
GiantLeapVT,
Now that establish the 70 mph test, now lower the speed to 60mph and see the difference.
Mike:
I am no economics guru, but I do have common sense. I think your prof smoked one before saying that.
It does not matter if you have $5, $10 or $25 worth of fuel. When you calculate the gallons to miles, the numbers will be the same with $5 worth compared to $25 worth of fuel. Unless you did something different, like the tips given. ^

ok....about the $10 at a time thing. That would only make sense if the gas prices were on their way down. If they are constant or rising than it you are gonna spend the same amount of money or more per gallon of gas.
whoever said that ice is less dense than water becuase of hydrogen bonds is totally right. there is no other explanation. About the pure water not conducting electricity and not freezing or boiling....no....pure water does all of those things.
And for whoever said use premium gas....this thread is about saving money. Even if you are getting better gas mileage...which in most cases you wont. You will still be spending at least 10 cents more per gallon(around here anyways). So...lets say that regular gas is 1.50 per gallon. Lets say that you get 10 gallons each time you fill up and that you get 30mpg on avg. All with regular gas. That comes out to approxiamately 5 cents per mile. In order to get that same price per mile from mid grade which we will say is 10 cents more per gallon you would need to get 32mpg on avg. And to get the same price per mile for Premium which we will say is 10 cents more than mid grade you would need to get at least 34mpg. I dunno...mayeb you can do it but i never get more mpg from my J with higher octane gas.
Supercharged 95 BMW 540i M-Sport
Very good point^
Premium fuel is a waste of money for our cars, unless you have force induction. Mid grade fuel is complete waste of money period.
You can't use it on force induction because it's to low for it. Mid-grade is usually 89 octane, while FI engines or hi performance engines call for a min of 91 octane.
And mid-grade fuel is more expensive then regular, and you are not going to get any benefits out of it.
I really don't know why do gas companies even offer it?
