If a 2.4 LD9 Jumps time does it set off the CEL ?

If a 2.4 LD9 jumps time, like possibly 1 tooth on the exhaust cam or maybe 1 tooth on both intake and exhuast cam, Would it set off the check engine light ? Would the engine run rough ? The 2.4 ld9 in my 99 z24 sounds like a diesel when it's idling. The noise seems isolated to the right top side of the engine (timing side). The noise disappears with increase in rpm. Anything above about 800-1000 rpm and you cannot hear this diesel like dull ticking noise. The engine runs great otherwise and has been averaging 20 mpg in the city. No engine lights or anything. It's been suggested that the engine jumped time and that this is what's causing the awful diesel noise at idle.

No it. Would not set off the cel. Sounds like a bad tensioner.

The tensioner is a new tensioner from PCI. Has less than 5000 miles on it. Also, seems like the engine may be running slightly rich. But still no engine light. It comes on at start up then goes right back off like it's supposed to.

Could be a spun bearing. Happened to mine sound like a tapping in the head but was the second rod bearing.

Highly unlikely. A spun bearing noise increases with rpm and has a sharp metallic tapping sound. The noise that I'm hearing is a dull clakety sound and is only present below 900 rpm. It completely disappeasr above 1000rpm. Just imagine a turbo diesel vw jetta engine idling. It sounds very similar to that. I've had 3 different mechanics listen to it and they all say not to worry about it and to "just drive it 'till it dies" They said that if it was out of time it wouldn't run or it would run like crap. I just know that a healthy 2.4 ld9 is not supposed to sound like this one does.

Let me say I have heard many LD9 spun bearings, and they all sounded different, not the what your suppose to hear.

With that I think your issue is tensioner. There is two design tensioners a two piece and a one piece. The two piece requires oil pressure to assist, so as the rpms come up it works better.

The one piece design is straight mechanical. I only use the one piece design.
