What's the quickest and easiest way to remove the 2.4 liter engine from an automatic 99 cavalier ?
wrap a chain around the engine, wrap the other end of a chain around a tree and slam it in reverse and floor it. Should take care of the problem...
or, pop the hood, look at what all is holding it in and start unbolting.
option 1 sounds way more fun.
I would remove the hood, and front bumper. Drain the coolant. Disconnect the coolant hoses. Removed the axles...slide hammer works...rent one. Take the top of the top engine mount. Remove the front bolt on the lower engine mount, and remove the the bolts for the trans mount. Accessed under/behind the wheel liner on the drivers side.
Popping the lower ball joint helps.
You'll need a bunch of 10mm, 13mm, 15mm, 17mm, 19mm, and 21mm sockets of various length, and open ended wrenches. I would disconnect the downpipe, and remove the exhaust manifold for clearance. Also remove the crank pulley to clear the frame easier.
I normally pull everything out the top. Trans and engine together.
Some people just disconnect everything and lift the body off the engine, trans, and cradle.

I'm just curious as to why you would pull off the front bumper? It isn't in the way of anything that I can tell? Also, if it's and auto, leave the tranny in the car and just remove the dampener. Might work with a manual, but I don't know if the pressure plate clears the bell housing.

When I removed my engine I unbolted the converter and left the trans in the car.
