A/C smoking

Well I just put my interior back together and decided to hook the a/c up after about 8 years of it not being hooked up,, well all was fine untill I pressed the little a/c button, then I started smelling smoke and hearing a squeaking noise, then noticed smoke coming from what I think is the ac compressor... Could it just be bad , or maybe just a new belt? Any help would be appreciated.. It's a 95 with a 2.2. Thanks

What do you mean by hooked the a/c up? Did you have the lines off? If you did, did you flush the system and vacuum it done before you refilled it? Sounds like the compressor locked up.

Did you ever have an ac belt delete? If the compressor was never connected the clutch could be bad. When you run your defroster the ac turns on. So if you used your defroster in the winter the ac should still be good unless you messed something up in the wiring.

Either locked up inside or a bad/rusted clutch. its probably not turning and the belt is just dragging over the pulley causing the noise and the smoke.
