why not do something crazy and, oh, i dunno, FIX the issue? a new ignition switch is like $30. to go pushbutton with switches will cost you at least twice that in parts, then wiring, then diagnosis time, then more wiring, then you'll realize it wasnt worth it and do that @!#$ the right way.
just sayin.

You will have a lot more issues than you think. A lot more goes on inside the key switch than just on/off/start
Have a nice day.
Having actually pulled apart an ignition switch for a third gen, It doesn't actually do much more then on/off/start. There is a cam in the switch that spread the contacts apart or lets them touch depending on the key position. Take your bad one apart and you will see.
Push button start, on my 95 it was a thick yellow wire and a thick purple wire.

well I ended up tearing it apart and fixed it correctly lol. it ended up being the key lock cylinder which is like $160 at oreillys ... damn lol

Always check Rockauto.com for parts before you buy. You can usually get MUCH cheaper prices for the same name brand parts. However, their cheapest V6/91Z24 ignition lock cylinder was around $115..so yeah thats a pricey fix.
or eBay/Amazon, but check fine print and make sure its not a refurb (which are perfectly fine) if you want new or ensure it has a warranty.
but nice job on doing it right. i still think a push button would have more complications than doing it the right way, but we dont modify because its always the right thing to do...lol
