04 Sunfire Reverse/License Plate Lights
Tuesday, April 09, 2013 3:51 PM
The reverse lights and license plate lights all went out at the same time. Fuses, bulbs look OK. Been reading about reverse light switch, but don't know if plate lights are on same circuit. Reverse lights do come on intermittantly, but my priority is the plate lights since I can get ticketed for those being out. Any ideas? Thanks in advance....

The license plate lights and reverse lights are not on the same circuit.

That being said it is 99% your reverse switch as its a very common issue.

Easiest way to diagnose its the switch is:

Turn steering wheel all the way to the pass side.

Its hard to get to the switch explaining over internet but its a connector by the frame rail on the trans on the drivers side.

Unplug that harness and using a wire or paperclip or something like that jump the 2 pins. (same thing as closing a switch)

Your reverse lights should now be on....if not you have another issue but most likely they will be on.

(make sure your key is in the "ON" position while jumping)

For your plate lights a bulb can look fine.

Switch the fuse out to a fuse from something that you know works. I usually use the horn or wiper fuse.

See if the lights are working

If not take a voltmeter and pull the bulb socket and check if its getting power. If it is then its a bad bulb.
