I've noticed over the past year that my car has been burning oil. I see some bluish smoke behind me sometimes, usually only on acceleration. I know I have an oil leak since the last time it was on a rack, we could see where it was dripping from (but not the source). I do have to put new oil in all the time when it starts idling rough.
But here's the thing... I was getting on the freeway today. I'm at about 55 on the onramp and I see a couple semi's coming so I give it quite a bit more gas to drop a gear (automatic transmission) and get a bunch more speed quickly. I see in my rearview mirror a huge cloud of bluish smoke. That can't be good. Any thoughts?

I'm not much of a car guy so is there anything I can check myself?

Check for a stuck PCV Valve, that can cause blue smoke., Also try and check your compression to see if your engine is worn, but that low of miles seems unlikely but i could be wrong.
LOL. What is a PCV Valve? =) And how the hell would I check my compression? I push my engine quite a bit, but not since it started doing that @!#$. I try to baby it now.
I remember about a year ago, I was driving past some friends on bikes in the city. I was going about 25, and I kind of floored it to go "VROOOOOOOM!" and it threw out a bunch of smoke then as well. But I don't do that very often if not at all anymore because I know it can't be good (due to the smoke) and I don't want to break anything. I used to do it quite a bit and the car would just shift on it's own, and speed right up. It's a quick car when you put it to the limit. But like I said, I don't want to F anything up at this point.

My bad no PCV valve on ecotec, I know the 2.4 doesn't have one but I guess ecotec doesn't either. Compression test ca be done with a compression test guage, you can rent from O'reilly's just remove all spark plugs, screw in gauge, have a helper crank over engine ad watch the pressure ad record where each one is at. I'm sure there is a how to somewhere o the forums.
Uh... doesn't that require removing a bunch of engine "stuff"? =)

just the spark plug cover and spark plugs, pretty simple to do.
Hmmmm.... I'll keep that in mind. Thanks for the idea.
