P0300 then P0303 after new coils
Sunday, January 20, 2013 7:38 PM
4 years ago i had a p0300 and i fixed it by replacing plugs and BWD coils and problem fixed. i am back to a p0300 and went and did the same changed the plugs (acdelco) and got the BWD coils again from advance auto parts. then it was still misfiring and but this time i got a p0303 code.

tomorrow going to try installing a new BWD ignition control module. i would of liked to put all acdelco parts back in but i don't have the time to get them ordered thru rockauto. also i hope i can get the coils returned since that did not fix the problem.

changed t he ICM and still missfiring, going to test battery next then look at fuel filter and or injectors.

i did noticed when i pulled plug #3 that it did not smell like gas, while the others did.

so my next move should be the fuel filter correct?

You need an advanced scanner to figure it out, have it professionally dig'd, you have already spent that throwing parts at it. Have you checked compression? I would start with the #3 cylinder since you did get a #3 misfire code.

I think you should put your tools down and step away. Like Jason said you need to start with a compression test since that is the affected cylinder. take it to a real tech to properly diagnose your problem.

i will at lease do the compression test on my own. and start looking for a mech. thing is i dont trust them anymore after bad past experiances.

today did a compression check and results are normal.
cyl. 1. 214
cyl. 2. 220
cyl. 3. 214
cyl. 4. 230

i went to junk yard today to see what was there and i noticed i have a crankshaft sensor too. anyways i tested for spark today one (new) plug was not sparking. i changed with an old one and it sparked, put it back together and it still misfiring. next im going to check the fuel system i am sure its not a spark/ electrical problem. one more try and then i taking the car somewhere.

also got battery tested and it was fine. said it was good just needed a bit of charging. but like i said same results still mis firing. i also tried an EGR valve from t he junk yard and it did not help.

so far my check list:

Faulty spark plugs or wires (CHECKED NEW)
Faulty coil (pack) (CHECKED NEW) (though next i will try a junk yard coil housing)
Faulty oxygen sensor(s) (BOTH HAVE BEEN NEW)
    Faulty fuel injector(s) (CHECKED NEW)
    Burned exhaust valve (CHECKED)
    Faulty catalytic converter(s)
Stuck/blocked EGR valve / passages (CHECKED)
Faulty camshaft position sensor (CHECKED NEW)
    Defective computer

all that is left is fuel filter, cat. and the ecu which i dont think so.

Can sparkplug wire(s) go bad? It might be getting spark one minute, then miss a few.

What tool do you have?

I have the Actron AutoScanner Plus scan tool.
So , today I checked the bank 1 o2 sensor. And its still a problem, so I call a mechanic and talk about it. and of course the one part he says is 90% of the time the problem I have not changed yet. The coil housing.
He said if it’s not that then bring it to the shop. He also said sometimes you can of fixed the part. But he said y you need a special computer to reset the system and for example tell the cylinder that was mis firing to start back up again, he said it’s a safety feature cars have to avoid damaging the catalytic converter.

Glad to hear that.
Do 05 cavs have a coil housing. I've had to replace my ignition contol module twice.but it still runs a little rough. When it was in the shop the battery went dead and they replaced it. Do i need to reflash the computer?

Thanks, i'll check the sparkplugs. Also i need to work more on the car myself instead of taking it to a shop.

yeah do that save money just don't do like me and start changing parts. diagnose them 1st.

i spent $447 and the only part needed changing was $36.
