New to this site, recently got a 2002 Pontiac Sunfire SLX Sedan, canadian model with the 2.2 letre engine. Had overheating problems when I bought it (fan would not turn on). Replaced relay for the fan, installed new fan motor, new thermostat, new coolant temperature sensor and new radiator cap and seal. Still had overheating problems even when fan would turn on. Bled air from coolant, that helped it a bit but still ran hot (line or two above the halfway mark on the temp gauge) every now and then it would get 3 or 4 lines above but usually stayed around there until one day it went into the red zone in a matter of about 20 seconds. Pulled it over, bled air from coolant again. Here is my problem: I was driving it a few nights ago and put my foot on the gas going about 60 km/h when the car would not go into the next gear and started loosing power. Was driving on highway so I quickly pulled over in a parking lot and the car shut off on me. Car has a hard time starting now and staying running. Idle is a bit rough. Was never like this before, always started fine. It's not driveable so I had to get it towed. Question is what could be wrong?? There is no white smoke or black smoke coming from exhaust. Car has around 103,000 km. Makes a strange noise coming from the engine when the car is revved around 2000 rpm. What do you think could possibly be wrong?? Any opinions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks
