Door Latch Assembly Installation/Removal

Hey guys, some dumbass sabotaged the driver's side door latch assemply on my '98 Sunfire, so I want to move over a different assembly from my '96 Sunfire, which doesn't run anyway.

Got the door skin off, plastic moved outta the way . . . Haynes manual tells me there are three screws to remove, which I did, so the assembly is just floating in the door, connected only by the rods now.

So how the hell do I disconnect the rods!? Lol. The Haynes manual just says to maneuver the thing around until you get them loose, but I've never done this before so I don't have the benefit of experience and I can't figure it out. Do I have to disconnect the rods on the other ends - like, for example, from the inside door handle? That'd suck cuz I don't feel like drilling those rivets out, but hey, whatever I gotta do.

Any idea what an average shop would charge to just put a new assembly in?

Thanks a lot!

Mind the paint diagram, its the best I could come up with.

The black is the rod, use your imagination.
To remove the rod from the clip, push on the clip not the rod, in the direct of the red arrow first. They can be pretty tough. I've had to use pliers before, but if your latch is still in the door, that can be tough too, so your fingers might hurt. After you get the rod out of that portion of the clip, slip the end of the rod out in the direction of the blue arrow.

Installation is reverse of removal.

If you need a better picture, lemme know. I'll see if i can find an actual latch to take a pic of.

be careful as those plastic ends which connect the rods to the latch can often become very brittle overtime and are easy to break

there are those twist thingys, and the one has a cover type latch, it is all plastic and junk. carefull not to brake the handle, it is weak and cheap (like all of GM parts) Also the inside handle could brake too. I found it easier to remove the inner handle, by vigorously drilling the rivits. It not the worst, but you do need to twist your arms and hands in unhuman ways
