i am leaking oil or tranny fluid from somewhere under my engine,. i was hoping you guys could help me.
i have a 96 z24 with a 2.4L auto, and it has run perfectly up until now. it has 150k miles on it.
it is burning or leaking oil at a fast rate. the drip is comming from between the tranny pan and oil pan, and sometimes will drip off the corner of the trany pan, right next to the oil pan underneath.
the engine is pretty clean up top. no leaks i can see. the front of the tranny and engine is really clean, and all around the header and timing chain cover is also very clean with no buildup.
the axle boots are also clean, so im not sure where this leak is comming from. im thinking its some gasket somewhere, but i was hoping u guys could help me.
thanks!

well if oil is comeing between the trans pan and oil pan its a rear main seal. If trans fluid is comeing between the trans pan and oil pan its the front pump seal. Have to pull the motor or trans to fix eather.
Hope that helps,
Jeremy
is it possible its leaking around the head and running down?

and is it possible to TEMPORARILY fix this problem (assuming its one of those seals) with a bottle of oil or tranny filler stuff, the stuff that clogs any holes, i forget what its called....
anyways i am getting ready to buy a new 2.4L engine and hang it in my garage and replace the internals, and then swap it in, but i just wanted to know if a temp. fix would work for now.
and im almost 100% positive it is an oil leak.

you could try some stop leak
will it work
see ya!
well for some reason the dripping stopped, and the oil level is now staying the same, so i dont know what the hell is going on.

I'm having the same problem with my 96 auto. I have 104k on my sunfire. I checked everything. I just wanted to know what I can do to fix this problem.
I need your help guys on this one.
Need help too, similar problem on a 97 motor (96 Cav W/ 97 motor). I do not see where it is leaking from since the only seals I know of are the main seal and the pan, and neither would indicate oil from the back of the motor. I am hoping some radical stop leak would work, I hate cars.

Automatic Transmission fluid is redish if thatīs the color of the fluid leaking I would suspect the seal of the torque converter is fried. Keeping an eye on the trans fluid level will be in order which in our cars is a pia... since some genius in GM decided to eliminate the dipstick... Once one of the oilhoses close to the exhaust header broke ... the oil fell on the hot exhaust pipe and I got a small fire with a lot of smoke....luckily I had a fire extiguisher on the trunk and it worked. Guess the same genius decided to route the oil hoses on top of the exhaust pipe thanks God it was not the fuel line....Z-24 are Funnycars!
I know this is an old thread, but maybe this will help someone doing a search.
With the 2.4L engines, It's easy to be fooled into thinking that reddish puddle is transmission fluid ... it could be a coolant leak because the Dexcool mix is also a reddish color and has the feel of a very low viscosity oil. If it's coolant, most likely it's a leak from the water outlet housing which will run down between the oil and tranny pans and look like a leaking tranny pan seal. The water outlet housing is a plastic part with a notorious failure rate above 100K miles on the 2.4L's. If that's the problem, search this forum for 2.4 coolant leak or water outlet.
