So the other day I ran into an issue on my way home from a 60 mi trip. I had driven 60 interstate miles and just gotten back into town and at my first stop light I had my low oil press light kick on and almost instantly after that I heard what sounded like bottom end bearing noises. I shut the car down immediately at the light and waited for it to turn green and started it back up to get out of traffic and pull over. Upon starting it up again there was no oil light or noises but i got it out of traffic and checked the oil, it wasn't low to the point of low oil press, and got a ride. Later on I came back to the car and topped off the oil and started it up to limp it home. All was well until I assume the oil got hot and thinned out and I was getting the low oil light again and then the noise came back but its only in the 2k-3k rpm range. So my question is, is it likely that I have bearing damage or is the noise the failing oil pump? Any input is greatly appreciated!
this condition could be from excess bearing clearances on a high mileage engine. the oil pump will put out more pressure at higher rpm so the light goes off the faster the engine runs. I would put a gauge on it though to check out the oil pump. If it is xs bearing clearance you could try a thicker viscosity oil.
sometimes if your radiator starts to clog up on the highway the car will run a little hot, then after coming down to a low rpm the oil is too hot and an older engine can not hold oil pressure.
