Weird TPS issue Ecotec
Monday, September 12, 2011 5:23 PM
Having some strange things happen to my daily driver 04 LS sport. I've noticed for awhile that when cold, the car doesnt accelerate smooth. It doesnt really have a miss or chug, just isnt smooth. Once its warm I dont notice it. Also noticed some black smoke when accelerating hard.

I hooked up my scan tool to check for anything odd looking and noticed that with the throttle closed the TPS is reading 9.0%. At WOT it only shows 88.2%. I pulled the TPS off and using a screwdriver found the TPS smoothly transitions from 0-100%. But seeing as it isnt adjustable, when I bolt it back up it goes to 9.0%. Thats odd because in theory I should easily be able to reach 100% this way, but thats not the case.

Is there a way to recalibrate the TPS? I unhooked the battery and plan to leave it that way overnight and I'll recheck it in the morning. But even if that resets the low, will the high be wrong yet? The local parts store people are real sticklers about bolting up new electrical parts as a trial.

Another issue is that the car suddenly burned over 2 quarts of oil in a short time, but that can be addressed seperately.

The car has 86,500 miles on it and I keep it well maintained.

Thanks for any thoughts!
