Car starts with screwdriver but not key

My sister has a 2 door 01 that we have had since new, about 70k miles on it.

Recently she said it would not start, then she would try again and it would, then it wouldn't start at all. I turned on the ignition, jumped the starter with a screwdriver and drove it into my garage. I suspected the electrical portion of the ignition switch so I probed it and it tested bad. I pulled it fro the car and bench tested it to make certain and it tested good, this was odd. I plugged it back into the car without hooking it back to the tumbler, used a screwdriver on the switch and it started the car every time. I place the ignition switch back onto the column and use the key, and it wont start???

What the hell is going on here? Is there some type of electrical link between the switch and the tumbler? There appears to be a small point on the end of the tumbler that I can not identify, the tumbler may have one of those resistance keys but it looks like a purely mechanical connection between the switch and the tumbler. Anyone have any help for me???
