brake question
Thursday, July 07, 2011 8:08 PM
so today im driving home about40mph and the light turns yellow so i hit my brakes and the abs kicked on a did absolutly nothing to help. I felt it engage and stay engaged making the normal noise that abs does but I'm pretty sure I didnt hit the brakes hard enough warrant that reaction. I slid half way through the intersection before I stopped I will say the lights around here do change pretty darn quick but still don't think my cars behavior was normal. I have new tires and front brakes. is there something else to check? is this typical of our cars any input is apreciated. thanks

I've never had that problem. How far from the intersection were you when you stepped on the brake?

Take it to the part store and have them scan the ABS computer?

to be honest im not sure atleast 60 feet . I drive the road everyday so I am used to the road and how it reacts to weather ect. but it was enough that after I stopped I thought to myself hmmmmm the abs sure did kick on awfuk easy and it sure didnt seem like it made me stop faster. it felt like I was on solid ice just kept going

can you just have it scanned? I dont have any lights on

You don't need a light to have stored codes for the ABS. Sometimes it takes a few times for the code to be thrown out as a MIL. I would go to autozone or kragen or somewhere like that and have them actually scan the ABS computer.

can I just use the ob2 scanner? not real familliar with computer stuff. also sort of on topic what tire pressures you run? I moved mine up from32 to38 family friend suggested to go up to save money

I use 32 psi, that's what the tire manufacture calls for, so that's what I go. And you mean one of those cheap 40 dollar code scanners? No, you need a real scan tool to really see whats going on.

if the scanner is abs capable, yes. if not, no.

in all fairness I think it is 90 bucks.lol. thats all the auto parts stores around here have. I know my car recommends 30psi but the tires just say 44 max psi . I like getting good fuel mileage but i also enjoy stopping to. I am starting to think maybe I was hydroplaning that would explain why the abs kicked in so easier and with the tire pressures up you have less traction. so maybe thats all it is?

44 psi max isn't for rolling on. That number is for the tire tech's who put your tire on the wheel. It means thats the max pressure they can use to seat the bead. I use to get asked that all the time when people would come in for air.
