oil pan gasket

2001 cavalier Z24 (2.4L) I need to replace the oil pan gasket. I searched it and some said there are things in the way, i dont think so but wanted to see what yall had to say. Is there anything I need move to get the oil pan to drop no problem? and any special sealant i should use beside what autozone or whoever gives you?

Thanks so much.

The lower engine mount needs to come off,and the coolant pipe will also need to come off.
Be a good time for a flush and thermostat change.
there are a few bolts that attach to the transmission that will need to come out, other than that your good to go.
I used copper seal on mine just to help keep the gasket in place.

Oil Pans on 03+ Z24 never need to be changed even at 200+ k's

Oh yes, it's absolutely impossible for a gasket to go bad...

Agreed with Blue02. You'll just have to drain your oil and coolant, but it would be a good time to replace both.

most vehicles don't ever need the oil PAN changed. pan gasket, sure, but the pan itself, reusable.

the 2000 sunfire EFI 2.2L engine always needs a gasket if not a new oilpan but im sure theres some out there that survive.

On average they are 5 years older than any Eco in existence, of course they are going to leak. And rust? How do you expect something to rust if it's covered in oil?

They are an invincible engine that you can beat the hell out of and it will never die. A bad gasket at 100,000 miles is hardly something to scoff at.

Don't forget the aluminum block... and head... and valve cover...

Yeah have to agree with Rich, and Transporter. My 1983 Delta 88 with 99,000 miles JUST had the pan replaced due to rust, but thats bc it was a pure metal pan, with nothing covering it (rubberized undercoating ect.) but my 00 Z with 119,000 miles on her does not need a oil pan at all. Unless you hit something and put a hole through it, it rusts, or something along those lines, you should never need a pan. The pan gaskets DO go bad, but unless something is physically wrong, you should not need a oil pan. Just replace the gasket and go.

Im doing an oil change right now and jus today i seen smoke comin from under the hood when i came to a stoplight.. so im changin the oil pan gasket, and i ran into a problem. i took off the bolts but theres a bolt thats behind the engine mount bracket... How can i get to that without takin off the AC Compressor??
((sorry to bring this thread back from the dead))

Well, You maybe stuck removing it, if not loosening it up to pull that down. BUT, Im willing to bet that there is another issues causing you to smoke. I would have checked the valve cover gasket to see if it was leaking onto the exhaust manifold. I know my LD9 does smoke from time to time, but thats because the cam tower is leaking lightly and causing oil to get onto my exhaust header. Nothing major right now, but i will be fixing it soon. I am willing to bet that maybe your oil pan was leaking, but there is another reason that the car was smoking. Look into the valve cover leaking to fix your problem. As for the bolt behind the compressor, your probably going to need to remove or loosen it up to get behind it as I said earlier. Goodluck!!

I had to remove the a/c compressor, downpipe, and the engine mount bracket.. it was a b*tch to break the oil pan free due to the silicone haha!
