at first i was thinking lifters, but once you put the camera to the side of the engine it got real loud....sounds like loose timing chain/bad tensioner for chain

My Shop teacher told me that he thought it was the lifters to. But he told me to see if it changed in pitch when i put 10w-40 instead of 5w-40? same sound so i was thinking it was a tensuioner to. is this common? and i know that ecotec have 2 chains so 2 tensionser should i just ahead and change them both? Im not looking for a 1000 project just need to fix my baby. any idea how much its going to coast?

i dont know much about ecos but i guess it's regular maintenance to do timing chain and tensioner around 100k miles....does it go away when warm? mine sounds same just not as loud but only when cold...there are alot of wierd remedies for sticky lifters, some say small amount of auto trans fluid in the oil will free it up, marvel mystery oil will help too....10w-40 to 5w-40 will only change the noise when it's cold since both oils viscosity go to 40 when warm

dont take my word for it that it's timing chain though, thats just my "educated" guess...imo try the oil change first with a little bit thicker oil and see how it sounds, in the summer mine sounds perfect...in winter i need to warm the engine up before driving it or it sound like this but 10 times worse lol but mine is ohv not eco but lifters are lifters

Oh im sorry i meant 5w-30 to 10w-40 (same noise) and it does not go away but on some its louder then others. going to go buy a new tensioner tomorrow see if that help. hopefully the chain doesn't break. that would be bad news. i thinking about doing a compression test tomorrow in auto shop. we'll see what kind of numbers i get because im also losing oil........................

well if you're gonna go that far into doing timing chain, buy the whole kit and get it done, not just the tensioner..do the chain too

To much engine noise to tell really. Sounds kind of like a rod bearing just starting to go almost though.

Before you do anything start the car with the alternator belt removed to make sure it isnt something stupid like bad alternator or AC compressor bearings echoing in the engine bay and confusing you.
