So i bought this car it wont start getting spark put eather it will try to start but back fires i dont here the fuel pump. is there a easy way to check if the timing belt slipped. if you can call me 540-478-2929 as you can see my typing skills are ....... ok dont have any thanks
omg its a 1999 sunfire 2.2 5 speed
none of these cars had a timing belt... and posting in the correct forum will net you answers... i will move this for you
THANKS DID THEY HAVE TIMING CHAIN
Ok, first take a break, and slow down. Ok, calm now?? Good. Just woosaa until ur calm. Now, its probably a easy fix. Best thing to do is describe it better. Is it just turning over with nothing happening, or is it trying to start but still wont?? Ope the hood, locate the fuel pump relay and the blower relay. Find them?? There in the black box on the drivers side fender well. Open it up, and switch them. Try again. Did it start? If so-you have a bad fuel pump relay go buy one and swap them back. If not, swap them back to the normal spots, and lets move on. Get back into the car, and with the accelerator pedal pressed down, try and start the car. Does it start? If yes, then ur Idle Air Control Valve is bad, go buy one ,and install it, its held in with two little torx screws on the throttle body. If not, then lets move on. Turn the key to the off position. Then turn it back to the on postion. Can you hear the fuel pump make the little whine noise. Yes, then lets move on. No, then ur fuel pump is probably bad. If you heard it then lets move on. Make sure you listen or have someone back there while you do this a few times incase its working, so you dont replace it for no reason. If you did, then we go to the next problem. Now if none of those work, then you may have a problem with a sensor. Most common is the Crank Position sensor. That will cause the car to not start, as will the cam sensor, but those arent very common. Give those test a try, and then at worst case senario, pick up a crank sensor, and put that in. Just take ur time, because there a PITA to get out since the head of them thats in the block have a tendency to swell making them hard to get out of the hole its in. Goodluck.
BY SPRAYING EATHER IN THE AIR INTAKE SHOULDNT IT START AND RUN FOR A SEC
If the fuel pump is bad then yes. But if the IAC is bad it wont start due to there being no air coming into the motor. Try those tests I just told you, that will point you in the direction in which you need to go. Or at the very least, take those possibilities off the table.
WHY ARE YOU YELLING??!!
sneezys giving good advice for the most part...

What you mean most part
Lol. Thats golden right thur!!! LMFAO!!
ok did everything above still wont run. it will start for 3 sec and shut off than turns over it will back fire from the carb, just wont run
So it will start run for 3 seconds then shut off. While its running, can you keep it going while revving the motor. It sounds just like ur IAC is bad.
no it wont stay running at all replaced the iac . some one was saying it might have a ground issue or a short. do you know what items and sensors need to be connected for the car to run
also do you know if a wire harness from a automatic will work on a 5 speed . are the computers the same. i ask becuase my friend has a harness and puter from a 2000 its from a automtic mine is a stick
I have been told the automatic harness will work with the manual, you will just have extra connectors. I was told the automatic computer would work, but I think the automatic computer will set check engine codes. So altho it will work, you do stand having the chance of issues down the road.
Any other ideas about my problem
If it cranks and cranks then it could be your cam sensor or crank sensor. Have you tried a shooting a small amount of starting fluid into the intake while cranking to see if it fires up. if it does, then ur fuel pump is either bad, or something has tuend off ur fuel pump.
starting fluid dosent work. just back fires replaced both sensors
Then Other then myself looking at the car im out of ideas. So anything else Im not sure. Sorry man. It might be a wiring problem at this point.
