Motor Mounts and Hub Bearing

I have a 99 Z and the hub bearing went out on a 700 mile trip, thankfully only 150 miles from home but it sounded like sh*t and I was nervous as hell driving it. My question is, to replace the driverside hub bearing and put new motor mounts in (mechanic says they're all shot) what do you think I'll be looking at for parts and labor? The mechanic didn't have quotes for mounts but thought they'd be around $45 a piece and it'd take him a couple of hours? So parts and labor? And does what he said add up? Replies are much appreciated, thanks guys.

As far as the mounts are concerned I'm not sure if I want to pay for parts and labor, I had just put $ into the vehicle for suspension work and general tune up. They mounts arent in great shape but will still work, I just notice drag when I put it into gear (automatic). The no traction light also comes on at times when putting it into gear. I'm still curious what you guys think parts and labor would be to do the motor & transmission mounts. I also want your opinion on waiting to do the mounts until, the mechanic basically said everything should be ok youll just notice the drag.. ADVICE, THOUGHTS & OPINIONS PLEASE!

Well giving you a exact idea or even a round idea wont be very helpful. Mainly just because every shop charges different prices. Some do flat rates, most do book time with there hourly rate. Call up Autozone or Advance Auto or whatever parts store is near you, and price out the mounts, there not expensive at all and do the same with the hub assembly. Usually its about a hour for each a shop will charge, but IDK what the book time is for them. Usually, when im working on a car, ill charge them a hour of book time at my hourly rate which is 65 plus parts. So for me labor would be $195 labor + Parts. So take it as you will.

The trac light coming on has nothing to do with motor mounts. But can be because your hub is going out causing the abs ring to not read correctly. And it also could have nothing to do with it at all. You will need to fix the hub first then see if it keep happening, and if so, when It comes on, have someone with a reader pull the codes for the ABS system. Goodluck!

Thanks for the response Sneezy. The hub assembly has been finished. I'm grabbing the car tomorrow and hope the ETS light issue has been taken care of because that problem has been somewhat recent. I found the 3 mounts on enginemountswarehouse.com for $70 so I'm going order those (mechanics price was more). This mechanic has been fair so I feel bad ordering my own parts but I've been loyal to him so I hope he understands. Thanks for the help, I'll post again quick tomorrow after I get the car. May need more info on the ETS light, I hope the hub fixed it. THANKS

Ok so I got the Hub assembly completed with parts and labor for $130. I'm satisfied with the price, I'm not in a position to do the work myself (lack of skills and knowledge). The car rides smoothly and quietly which is great. ONE LAST QUESTION FOR YOU GUYS PLEASE, I AM AT CROSSROAD REGARDING THIS. The car is a 99z with 130,000 miles on it. I'm not excited to say the least regarding spending any more $ on it unless completely necessary. I've put a lot of $ into the car the in the last year because it seemed to be a better solution financially than buying a new car- FOR ME THAT IS. In the right financial spot it may have been the best to just cut the losses and buy a new reliable vehicle. WIth that being said the car seems to have decent life left but I don't have a crystal ball to determine the future. My dilemna is do I buy the above mentioned mounts and pay the mechanic to install them? He said it's driveable the way it is but I hate knowing I have sub-par parts on the vehicle. What are your thoughts? I'm looking at $200-230 inlcuding parts and labor for the mounts. Reponses are much appreciated.

And Sneezy I forgot to mention that you were correct. After the new hub was installed I had no issue with the ETS light coming on, it engages much smoother also. OPINIONS ON THE POST ABOVE WOULD BE GREATLY APPRECIATED, THANKS ALL.

Jim, Glad the hub cleared up the ETS light for you. Sometimes with those lights, if you have a hib thats bad, its kinda a 50/50 shot as to if it will fix it or not. But Im glad that was the issue. Luckily it didnt come apart, which I have seen a few do, and at that point, big things happen, from such a relatively small part to fix. Ne who, as far as your mounts are concerned. This is what I can tell you. Your mounts do mount the engine to the car, and the rubber inserts on the top one just quiet it up. If its clunking when you put it into drive, or if you notice the engine moving alot farther then normal, common thing would be to replace the motor mounts. The top side mount control ups/down and front to back movement, while the bottom one (dogbone as its commonly referred to as) controls the front to back torque of the motor. If there falling apart then best bet would be to change them. They can cause un-natural wear on things such as CV joints, and hoses due to constant movement of the engine. Granted the engine is made to move, but not alot. Its a pretty simple job to do the replacement of both of the mounts. The top can be done with a simple set of sockets, and the bottom is even easier. If you want any more information, dont hesitate to ask
