I have a 99 Sunfire GT 2.4L with the automatic 4 speed. I need to know for sure what filter and how much fluid this takes, because there is no dipstick. I went in to buy a filter, and the guy behind the counter told me it either takes 4 quarts or 6.9, depending on the trans. I have never heard this before, I thought they all took 6.9. He also gave me a filter that he said would work for either, what is the filter number for this? Thanks!

Sorry about this, the search tool didn't return results in the FAQ section, which would have helped a lot. It is 7 quarts from what I can tell. Sorry to ask a stupid question, but where did this guy get 4 quarts then?

Your trans is a 4t40e
The parts counter should have a computer and with a few clicks **counting the ones to minimize fb** should be able to nail down a filter..
If not, leave. quickly. If they can't find a common part, for a very common car, you are in the wrong building.

..To find things in a particular section such as the FAQ's - hold "Ctrl" and hit F, type a keyword into the find function.
The search function will return threads that contain the words you search for, it helps a lot, when you know how to use it.
I know because I found it all when I did my trans service and had to do all the hunting since the owners manual says either don't worry about it or take it to the dealer..

I assume you are just dropping the pan and filter.
If so you are not actually getting all the fluid. (The torque converter is still full etc.)
There is a CHECK PLUG on your transmission, right by the oil drain plug, on the side, when the car is running, trans fluid should be just up to the level of this hole, not pouring out, but if none at all weeps out, it may be under filled...
I followed a Hanes manual my first time because I had never done one of these before, it is a very valuable tool.
I believe the initial amount I added was 3.5 L and then I kept filling it up while shifting gears until it was barely weeping out the check plug.
Do more reading if you wish, there is more than enough out there to kill a night on this site and others.
