on wednesday my car started idoling weird so i took it to the shop. they told me that my throttle body was really dirty and my air filter needs cleaning. so they cleaned the throttle body and i replaced the air filter. they said my spark plugs were fine and everything else looked good. even after the throttle body was cleaned and air filter was replaced the car was still not idoling normal. the check engine light was NOT on when i took it to the shop. today i was pulling into the car wash and the bottom of my car scraped and immediatly my check engine light came on. could the problem be the 02 sensor? any input would be appreciated.
thanks
and also while the car was in the shop the mechanic told me that my timing chanin could be the problem. is this a possibility? i always thought that the timing chain never gave you any warning that it was about to go up.
finally got an eco wrote:the shop the mechanic told me that my timing chanin could be the problem.
and thats when you walk away...
Head to Autozone or checkers and ask them to scan the codes on your car (its free). it will tell you what is wrong, then you can go from there.
Definitely have the code scanned.
It will be simple from there. Guesshappy shops will only cost you big bucks.
Post back with the code. Be careful taking any advise they give you though, they're not always qualified to advise you at all.
ahh the check engine light went off today. will the scanner still be able to tell me what the code was??
check engine code was p0300
Ok, a PO300 is a random misfire. So means something is def not right. Since you have a Eco, Im willing to bet your coils/ICM is goiing bad. When you accelerate hard does it sputter and then take off?? I had a Eco in my 02 J and the same thing happened but never set a engine code. I would look into that, as I have seen many of them go bad, and it seems like a common problem with these cars. And if you want to know how many I have seen, its been 4 off the top of my head already I can think of that I know the people personally with Eco's that have had the Coils go bad. Goodluck!
Edit: I forgot to add this also. Your timing chain would not be the issue. They do give warnings (sometimes) before they go out as a loud rattling noise from the left side looking at the engine (passenger side) of the engine. Or I have seen them with no warning just snap and cause all types of problems. But its safe to say ur timing chain is not the issue here. The shop you took it too just took ur money for the other services they charged you for. Granted your air filter may have been dirty and your throttle body also, they should have known the diffrence between a misfire/rough idle and just a dirty intake system. So stay very far away from that shop if you can.

the car runs fine when im driving. whether im driving slow or the pedal is to the floor as long as im not stopped the car runs fine
Well, I say change the coils since I know those are known to go out and cause goofy issues with the car. Give that a shot, im willing to bet its the problem. It will get worse over time tho if you dont fix it and sooner or later start going out under a load. Either way goodluck!
