I have a 1998 Cavalier z24 and we had recently changed the head on it cause it had jumped time. Once we got to putting back on the cam towers one of the bolts snapped off into the head!! Luckily we were able to get it out with vice scrips but my question is this are these bolts torque to yield cause I cant see any other reason why they would break that easily unless they stretch like the head bolts do.
I hope that someone can help me out here thx!!
they are not torque to yield. Sometimes they just break.
Ok cool now do you have to go through GM to get them cause I cant find them on autozone or o'reilys?
I think the only place you can get them is the dealership (Like I did) or a salvage yard. I had trouble finding the bolts myself through the dealership, but finally did.
I can't seem to find the part number for them through GM do you remember how much they cost by chance?? im on a tight budget lol
hopefully you didnt bottom it out... messing with these cam tower bolts really isnt the best deal. aluminum hates being meshed with steel, more often then not you just pull the threads right out of the head and its an even more messy experience. you got REAL lucky you could get it out because if not you would have needed to take that tower off so you can get an easy-out into the broken off piece. otherwise it woulda leaked oil i guarantee it.
ive yet to see one bust right off like that so next time be careful and torque them to the spec stamped right onto the cam towers themselvs. i believe its something like 13 ft pounds, so not much.

^^^ I was thinking the same thing, usually you strip the aluminum out before breaking one of the bolts. Im very surprised you were able to do that.
Camshaft housing to cylinder head bolts are 16 ft lbs then a additional 90 degrees, the rear two on the intake are 16 as well and then only 30 degrees

It did not strip, surprisingly. lol We saw in the FAQ on here for LD9 specifications they say 11FT LB + 90 degrees....which actually equals out somewhere around 13 FT LB im pretty sure? Anyway, we didnt even get that bolt to the 11FT LB before it snapped

The 13 FT LB thats on the cam cover is for the plug torque
