engine randomly surges with a/c or defrost on

so i unplugged the electrical plug on my a/c compressor because it had no freon left in it. i didnt notice if it did it before or not, but when i put it on defrost the engine rpms go up a few hundred. then they will go up and down randomly, kinda like the compressor is is cycling on and off. is this normal or no? thanks.

Yes, it is normal when the A/C is on. the RPM cycling could be an "anticipation" programing in the PCM, meaning: The pcm knows the Compressor will be coming on and putting a large load on the engine, so when it sends the signal to turn on the compressor, it commands the Idle up, and when it sends the signal to shut if off, it commands normal idle speed.

you do not need to unplug it, the ecm wont even bother activating the ac clutch if no pressure is sensed in the system or if its below 52* iirc.

It should not hurt anything, but make sure the unplugged wire is out of the way of the engine so it will not melt or get damaged. I would leave it plugged in to make sure the plug stays safe and clean.
