trying to identify needed repair.
Sunday, December 12, 2010 7:44 PM
Ok hey everyone im kinda stuck as to what is causing this issue i am having. Its a minor issue but is reallllllly annoying to me driving it. It sounds like its in the driver front corner. Its def a moving part as when im driving i hear like a wooopwooopwooopwooopwooop sound and as i slow down it slows down to a wooop woooop woooppp. till say 15mph. Its not the rotors, not the wheel bearing(had a new one and swapped it still there). wheels were tested and are true. tires are good. now given she needs a alignment BAD. ive went from bags to drop for the winter and havent had it aligned. yet still made with the other set up(still needed align). so im wondering if its just in need of a good alignment or the axles going. i dont wanna get a alignment if i need swap a axle. how can i tell if its bad. its a 2k, eco swap, 90k on axles 180 on powertrain. given the miles is there bearing in the axle housing of the trans? it was good for a few months like i took her to the bash n didnt notice the noice so thats whats making me think axles going. its just soo annoying. any input would be appreciated. thanks

Are the boots good on the CV axles? Is it a auto trans?Any fluid leaks?Could have a bad transmission axle shaft seal or bearing.Should always have a alignment done after repairing the front suspension.

they seem to be tight, intact, no tears, no leaks. its a auto. it wasnt beeing driven much at the suspension work. also the only person i trust in the area to due it right is out with a heart operation. the other shops i really dont trust since we sent them cars and they needed to do it a few times. i mean who aligns a car that clearly has a bent strut.(im talking housing and all lol) soo yeaa my faith in them is not there. lol. how can i check to see the bad bearing,?

Sounds like you have a bad cv axel....

ok so its still there and im down to my last two options here. I really wish i could figure out when this started lol. Any way Thanks to the fact i have pretty much a front clip from my motor swap parts were easy to come by(and free lol) So Ive already changed, axle, rotors, wheel bearings, wheels n tires, checked all links and bushings im down to my last two ideas. Blown left strut(kinda thinking started after i debagged for static drop for winter) or bad trans mount(auto) i doubt its the mount.

This Wayne. Beaty was making the same noise, as well as starting to develop a "clunk" when put into gear, it was a bad cv, replaced with a new half shaft and no more noise.
One way you can check is to jack up that corner, and see if there is play in the axle...hold the shaft and have someone spin that wheel back n forth a bit, if you can hold the axle in place (as in it doesn't spin with the wheel moving), and if you can rotate the cv shaft while the wheel is being held still, then the joint is slipping internally.

My sunfire did the same thing. I had already replaced both bearings, ball joints, and sway bar links and it still did it. Come to find out it was my CV shafts when I installed new upgraded ones. So from my experience, I'd say thats your problem.

I had the noise in mine and almost bet 100 bucks that is was the right side wheel bearing. replaced it and the noise was still there. come to find out it was the other side..... try making agressive turns to lift weight off your tires(and bearings) if the noise gets louder or completely goes away that is a good way to determine if you have a whel bearing failure and what side as I found out.

i wish it wasnt snowing just yet here so i could do some my poking around. . Thats the thing with the cv you guys are saying its in the axle right(brain fart) I have comepletely removed the axles and swapped with known good ones from the donor. The noice is still there. I just gotta nail it im soo pissed off right now lol. Like the floor around 30+ has a nice vibe in it and it goes away at say 18 and below. not present during hard accel or accel at that until let off the gas. Matt i know what ur saying as beat gave a VERY nice foot massage before u took ownership haha let me tell u hahah. But doesnt seem the same as beaty. My bro said he feels nothing on his side when we went out the other night it seems to be mainly in the driver side. But like i posted, Ive swapped out Rotors, Axle(full), Wheel hub, wheels, Tires. Im going to dig out the stock shocks cause as i think more and more it seemed to start around the time i static dropped her for winter. (I miss my bags in winter time lol). Ill see what i can do today ill give the axle a second glance when i get under there. Thanks guys

Make sure the axles are FULLY seated to both the trans and the hub. I have seen cars that drive down the road with them not fully seated (you can see the spline on the end of the cv) which could make the cv bind up and make noise going down the road...

ok update i had her jacked up and put in drive and the wheel was accually making a noise on p-side. it was tranfering to the driver side kinda like a mind mess. so turns out i swapped the wheel hub and boom. all is quite n well. and just as good measure i ordered a second new hub for the driver. to do it as a pair since its bound to go sooner or later. thanks for the help.

i vote alignment first..if it doesnt help, you said you needed it anyways so it cant hurt to start there.....think about it, whoop whoopp maybe wheel is rubbing?? alignment just might fix that by striaghtening the wheel
