Help! My radiator fan motor is dead. I backtracked for voltage and the motor is the problem. I bought a replacement, but after taking the mounting bolt off, I cannot get enough clearance to lift the fan assembly up high enough to clear the plastic clip that holds the top of the fan assembly. Can someone tell me what I an doing wrong?
M wife actually replaced mine in my 99 while I was at work one day. She somehow pulled it out the top, but had to do it in front of the core support. When she put the motor back in, it was slightly offset and the fan blade had a very slight rub against the schroud.. I pulled it out the next morning and did it out the bottom behind the core support. I think it was easier out the bottom, but both ways will work. If you pull it out the top though, just be careful not to flex the A/C condensor pipes and hoses too much and create a leak.
An FYI, my wife is just as much a car person as me. However she knows nothing about doing any kind of repair beyond replacing spark plugs, oil changes, and putting gas in it. So for her to have completed replacing a cooling fan motor, it must not be that difficult, especially since she did it in a gravel driveway in the middle of an Ohio February.

You just pop the fan out of the little clip. The one that has the round part on it. Then lift up on the fan as it hooks down inside the top lip of the radiator. I've pulled plenty off them. And you can take it out the top or bottom. If it is a 2.2 that will work. On a 2.4 it may only come out of the bottom. Also remember if you got a fan at the junkyard. Remember that a 96-99 is the same. Then 00 up is the same. As I just went threw that.
I have a 99 and a 00 sunfire. The 00 up has the thicker better radiator and the 99 below is thinner. Where the fans can't interchange because how it has the lip at the top that set down in the top of the radiator. The good thing is the radiator and matching fan will work in any year. Tell you get up in the eco's. I looked at moms and it was different just don't remember what it was.
