2.4l crank seal oil leak
Sunday, October 31, 2010 9:58 AM
I had my 99 sunfires water pump and timing chain replaced about a month ago from a local shop and after i got the car back it had a slow leak from the timing chain to crank seal. Ive had the shop replace the seal 2 times and it still leaks. they are now telling me that something else is causing it to leak and that i will have to pay to get that figured out. i will upload pics later but i am getting a couple small beads of oil ever 15 seconds comming from behind the crank pully and in front of where the timing cover and crank meet. If anyone has any advice that would be awsome. Like i said car never leaked a drop of anything before the water pump let loose last month. Now not leaking coolant but i am leaking oil. Thanks a lot.

Might want to check and see if they over tightened the front cover, when i replaced my water pump i over tightened it slightly and it leaked like a futhermucker, all i did to fix it was take the bolts out and tap it back straight with a hammer. Now it doesnt leak a single drop. doesnt take much, just a few small taps.

Ok actualy it is leaking from the bottom of the timing cover gasket. the very bottom behind the crank pully.
Here are 2 good pics. Second one is zoomed in.

Like i said it is leaking from the very bottom of the timing cover gasket.

Thanks

Ok looked at the car again this morning and i think i found the "actual" problem. When the shop put the timing cover on the bottom left alignment pin is not completely in the hole on the timing cover. The on the timing cover doesnt sit flush to the timing housing. The pin (to align the cover) on the housing isnt in the cover hole completely. Correct me if i am wrong but that would cause a sllow leak from the timing assembly correct?

If there is any gunk in that alignment hole, and its not flush it can cause a leak. It also looks like the pan itself isnt all the way foreward. I could be wrong but the pics are blurry and it is kinda hard to tell. But take it back, and show them urself. A shop will take care of it if they messed up. Goodluck.
